Beginner Programmer

So I've decided that I want to get some general programming skills, mainly to make websites and get better with Flash. What would be a good language to learn, considering I only have a very basic understanding of Java?

python, php, and javascript are the key languages. python is probably better to learn with, php can teach you some bad habits.

there's also ruby, but learning ruby is sort of like joining a cult..

actionscript is similar to javascript

but what about binary? good starting point.

Keep working on your Java to build up skills that apply to all kinds of programming, not just web. As Chaos said, stay away from PHP until you have a good feel for what "nice" code should look like.

COBOL

if you're doing this to get better at websites n stuff and you aren't intimidated by it, just go with java. java itself isn't used much in web shit, but javascript actionscript etc. are derivatives of it.

if it drives you up the wall, python. there are good tutorials for it.

You should check out a book called Code by Charles Petzold.
