Not a Buchla in site... Sad.

Also, did anyone else feel like the host had no idea what he was talking about?

holy shitman this webpage's idea of top 20 synthesizers is FUCKING SAD AS HELL.

this shit just perpetuates boring gear to be fetishized

Uh, the Mellotron isn't a synthesizer.

Butt hurt much? They listed all the major and popular synths and made a top list, this isn't rocket science.

They picked the most influential, not the best synths. The DX11 was way cooler than the 7.

butt hurt? no just very embarrassed for whoever made this atrocious page

How exactly are you supposed to decide the "Best" synths if you dont take popularity into account? Most gear is limited by who uses it, so it seems appropriate that you could quantify at least some value of a synth by how effectively it was used and how easy it is to make pleasant sounds in addition to its depth/complexity.

Buchla shouldnt be on there because its not affordable or intuitive enough for the average musician to use.

These are what people consider the top 20 GREATEST synthesizers ever? That's just sad, M1, jv-1080? D-50? proteus 1? Greatest synths in the history of mankind?

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

heck most of the analog synths listed aren't even that hot.

I got a JV1080 and it ain't that bad lol. Editing is a bitch I'm not going to deny that but it has a lot of the presets which are pretty decent so it my mind it has a lot of usability straight off the bat.

Mm why wasn't the 303 listed - that is definitely a huge suprise.

pretty dull list, a couple things in there I like, plenty I'm not fussed about.

guess that's what to be expected from taking a poll though, but at least that's honest. I'm sure loads of people on this forum would mention stuff like Buchla and Serge, but how many of us have enough experience with any of em to make an honest appraisal?

my list would something like (in no particular order)

Cwejman S1

Macbeth m5

buchla 200e

Serge modular

yamaha cs80

korg ps3300

Jupiter 8

Arp 2600

EMS synthi

Roland system 100M

Arp 2500

Korg ms20

And so on. but if I'm honest, that's mostly from hearing them played, very small amounts of playing with, looking at pics, etc. A list of synths I've properly played with/owned, and could make an honest assessment of would be incredibly boring in comparison.

He pronounces "Moog" wrong in the first minute of the video. Pretty bad for a self-described gear whore.

Bob said there is no correct way of pronouncing Moog or Moag.

I liked the documentary but I got a little sick of the ad break titles, the joke mention of the 303 and I can't believe that cunt Automatic Gainsay got on it with the Minimoog at the end (had a massive feud with that twat about how electronic dance culture music wasn't simply a niche market and had no relevance in his prog rock/80 pop view of what electronic music is).

This was a list of the commercial influence of synthesizers not the capabilities or musical legacy which is why Buchla or 303's weren't given a position methinks i.e. if you've worked in a music shop for the last 40yrs these would be the big hitters.

Buchla and 303s weren't given a position becasue the synths were selected by a sonicstate user poll. It's not like they had some historical committee put that shit together. It was just a bunch of twats voting on the internet. Not a bad list when you consider that.
