Reaper 3, downloadable from here

Here's the highlights:

  Quote
  • Automation lanes
  • Nested track folders
  • Multiple tabbed projects
  • Multichannel (greater than stereo) media support, including MOGG
  • FX parameter controls on track and mixer control panels
  • Customize toolbar icons and actions
  • Programmable MIDI joystick/game controller support
  • Inline MIDI editing
  • Edit multiple MIDI items in one editor
  • Sync MIDI editor to arrange view, including looped items
  • Export project MIDI, with tempo map support
  • MIDI event filter
  • Track MIDI controls (manage bank/program changes, sysex, automate CC)
  • MIDI hardware timing improvements
  • Full sysex support
  • All-native graphics rendering engine (better appearance and performance)
  • Memory use improvements
  • Soft controller takeover, including FX parameters
  • MORE! Too much to list here!

I'm particularly interested in:

Edit multiple MIDI items in one editor

because it is very handy for composing, and as far as I know, Cubase and Logic are the only other DAWs with that feature (as in, overlay midi clips from different tracks on top of each other so that you can edit multiple instruments in the same window and see how the notes relate to each other)

edit: yep, it works, here's a screenshot of the multi-edit, with one clip in green and the other in red:

(to do this, select multiple clips and press CTRL-ALT-E. Changing the colour to 'source' instead of the default 'velocity' makes it easier to see which notes are for which track)

I'm gonna use my 1.x licence for a couple of months to [fingers crossed] get a better $/£ conversion before I upgrade.

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

yeah the cubase manual hardly mentions it, but for me its one of the best features.

select multiple clips and then open the midi editor - you can then switch between the parts using a little drop-down box at the top of the editor. You can also change the colours settings so that notes are coloured using the clips colour (its a little icon towards the right of the midi editor)

There'll be about 3 billion more updates in the next few weeks though judging by the 1.x and 2.x release schedule.

Do you guys like the workflow on reaper? I'm still trying to get it set up right but I think I'm going to start using it more heavily, because I like a lot of the features.

its still fidgety, annoying, and unintuitive after about an hour of play with it today. I mostly get annoyed by how huge the menus and submenus are, both the right-click context menus and the main bar. Does anyone here know if it is possible to record VST GUI movements?

Just figured out the GUI recording thing, as well as timestretching and reversing and stuff like that. Too bad there is no rate parameter on audio tracks, there is only the master rate parameter. I would really like to find a host that has this feature. I'm sure cubase has it but I'm still weary about cubase.

I use reaper primary for mixing/mastering, so the feature that i'm most happy about is automation lanes.

Yeah ditto as I still do everything else in Buzz. I probably only use like 5% of Reaper's features as a result, but that 5% is ace !

reaper's supposed to be one of the most reliable DAWs out there as I recall it

although Live 7.0.3 has been working quite well for me too the last couple of months, it's mostly cheap ass VSTs that make my DAWs crash

i' ve never had a problem with live crashing or stopping. if you download one of those popular cracked ones ( which i don't do ) , like an AIR release, you shouldn't have any troubles

took this for a spin and within 5 minutes it crashed when setting up my novation with it. shame, because im sick of using unreliable cracked DAWs and this was quite affordable.

If you can find a way to reproduce the crash the developer will surely fix it. Hes a fucking madman, I think hes the guy who orinally coded winamp. This app has grown so fast its unbelievable I hadn't tried it too long ago when it was like version 0.98 and its already much better.

Remember that this is the first release of version 3... If you want something stable use the most recent version 2.

On a PC, Reaper rocks. I have a friend using it to great effect for pretty much everything. On a mac it still sucks though, which is a shame for me.

Audio editing on it is fantastic, possibly the best overall of any DAW I've seen. Midi is very usable. Get a new skin on the GUI and it's not so so eye-hurting.

Thumbs up for Reaper.

the only 'limitation' the free version has is a nag screen that you have to click away everytime you load up Reaper as I remember reading from another forum

other than that full functionality, everything!
