i could technically afford that but i'd have a well shit couple of months food wise

Yeah technically anything can be had if you really wanted it...

I guess it's more a question of how much you'd be willing to spend on a synth... If I found a synth I really loved and had great architecture I would be willing to spend up to $2000.

I know people love hardware, but there are also virtual toys I can't afford, mostly in time. I wish I had the time and patience to learn audio programming languages like pd and supercollider, then I'd have an infinite amount of toys at my disposal!

Well, the way I look at it is that you could spend your time at a job raising the money to buy these pre-made machines, or you could spend that time studying how to code them yourself. Of course, there is something to be said about utilizing existing creations likely made by teams of professionals.

yeah shit some guy that lives right near me was selling an original old serge modular system about 4 times larger than that. He seemed to have some absurdly low price for the whole lot about 2,000 usd (it must have been worth at least 10,000 by the look of it). and fuck it if the guy didn't on the sneak sell it to somebody else, the owner most likely got wind of it's real value

Freudian slip, i meant 2500 just look at that fuckin thing. the 2600 is awesome too but there are plenty of good emulations of it out now. I wish people would make good emulations of more old modulars. I just played with an EMS synth emulator that was pretty bad ass.

I kind of can't afford a Juno 60 / TR-808 / TB-303 / TR-606 etc

All those modular synths seem more complex than fun imo

The ARP 2500 is indeed an object worthy of immense lust. However if I could afford one, I still wouldn't get one. While they're both great machines, unfortunately the build quality of the ARP stuff was not the best. An ARP 2500 nowadays would most likely need semi-regular maintanance, and parts for these machines are becoming rarer. It's a similar story with the 2600, not the best build quality in a synth, a lot of care and attention needed. Make sure you live near a tech who can fix them (and good techs who can fix these things are rare).

It's an unfortunate general fact that most American vintage analogue synths weren't build as well as their Japanese counterparts. Vintage Sequential Circuits gear is another example. I own a Pro One, and like a lot of them the keyboard is double triggering on a lot of keys (and I have the better j-wire model). In contrast my Roland SH101 is in almost imacculate condition, working as perfectly as the day it was sold, rock solid tuning still etc.

Also the more complicated a vintage synth is the more can go wrong with it. You're always hearing about people on this board going "a GX-1 would be my ultimate synth", if they actually had one it would probably cause them constant heartache as things would be going wrong, out of tune, this needs resoldering, this irreplaceabe part has died etc. Even it's younger cousin the Yamaha CS80 is notoriously badly behaved in the tuning and "general working order" department. I'm on the Yahoogroups Yamaha CS80 list, I don't own one I'm just interested in them, and every few days there's a post from somebody asking how to fix a certain thing, and these are people who are skilled with soldering irons etc!

That said, I'm sure there are perfectly working examples out there, but people never realise the harsh reality of these machines, that they need constant work and will never 100% play along. I recently had to get all the switches of my TB303 replaced because some were double triggering, it's working great again now though, but that cost 100 Euro. Ah it was worth it though....

yeah this is always going to be something to watch out for, I bought a PAIA modular about 2 years ago for a really low price but it felt like only 2/3rds of it worked correctly. it was like a greek hell because i had this wall of knobs in front of me that was basically crippled.

yeah i used to be really lusty for modulars, but once i figured out that there's so much baggage that comes with them, and thought about the fact that you do all that work and on most your only option of patch storage is a nice camera, i lost interest. If I were rich and had an in house repair person, heck yeah.

I will say that the arp 2500n & 2600 would be at the top of my list, that and the roland system 100. Also even though not modular, but just as much baggage yamaha cs-80 most def. I think Vaz & Nord modulars suit me just fine though :)

more stuff i really want and can't afford:

though i would settle (for now) with this:

HP-EMS_Synthi_Avs.jpg

which is a $450 vst....but sounds incredible!

This was on my list....

Alchemy-All-Ahdsr-Perform.jpg

but i actually just bought it a couple weeks ago (dirt cheap+ an old guitar pedal :)) off a dj friend who shelled out for it b/c it looked cool then realized he had no idea how to use it! It's pretty awesome but i'm glad i didn't pay full price for it. SOme of the samples are kinda crap quality and the interface takes some getting used to. Great va sounds though! Super flexible. I've been working on mixing old stuff for upcoming album too much in the past few weeks (plus Antarctica track) to really play with it much.

Without a doubt. Wanna split it?

Yes. We'll take it two days at a time and alternate on Sundays.
