hey I'm going to Scotland in September, going to be doing the sight-seeing rigamarole, and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions on places to visit. I want to see some ancient grounds, locales off the standard tourist's path, or just anywhere you especially dig.

I'll be staying with my great aunt in Hamilton, but will arrange some wheels, so tell me where to go!

there's many places to go - the ones on the beaten track are pretty cool (various castles and shit).

take in loch lomond (drive up the east side as far as you can go, get out the car and walk to the water - acid point for the win).

after loch lomond carry on up the west to inverary, north to loch awe, loch etive, to oban with beautiful views to mull, pass loch linnhe to fort william to climb ben nevis, on to kyle of lochalsh, nip over to skye to the black cuillins, back to loch carron, torridon, loch gairloch, loch ewe - some of the the nicest scenery scotland has to offer (and my favourite part of scotland)... take at least a week to do this at your leisure for a really memorable trip and photos galore. the fresh seafood around here is as good as you'll get.

some easier trips from hamilton...

stirling and bannockburn.

for a nice day trip head west to ayr, troon, go down to sawney bean's caves (famous 15th century incestual cannibal - http://www.mysteriousbritain.co.uk/scotlan...wney-bean.html), the electric brae, stranraer.

isle of arran has some cool standing stones and an easy climb up goat fell.

hamilton is only 20 miles or so from the historic town of lanark, on from here to the scenic falls of new lanark and bonnington lynn... take a nice riverside trail along the clyde with it's spectacular waterfalls.

edinburgh is a must for the scenery and history if you haven't been... the castle, royal mile, mary king's close, climb arthur seat or go to the beaches to the west of the city.

glasgow for the shopping, nightlife and art galleries.

if i think of more i'll add later.

Yes to Arran - I'd also recommend the King's Caves on the south-west of the island, they're an easy walk and pretty impressive. Even more impressive is the noise: There must be some equally deep caves just below the water line and the noise the tide makes as it enters them is incredible.

Islay off the west coast is beautiful too, and home to some of the worlds best whiskies.

Loch Fyne for the best seafood.

You can't go wrong with the west coast at all really.

i like crail and anstruther (with the best chippy in the uk apparently - but i thought it was over rated)

and there's some amazing caves at east wemyss... you go into a ruin on the cliffs and in one room there's a winding staircase down maybe 30 metres into the darkness... you either emerge on the beach or get lost in a big network of old smugglers caves and tunnels. some are fenced off cos people kept getting lost... torch and big bollocks required.
