What is up with all the black lagoon monsters?

I must have missed something. Someone fill me in. Why does everyone have this monster dude in their avatar? I'm thinking its the creature from the black lagoon or something but yeah someone point me in the right direction so that I might partake in the avatar alteration

There was a clip/pic of one of these dudes on a recent interview with will ferrel not a few days ago, i think on either the daily show or tonight with conan. Suddenly these guys pop up all over watmm.
