WATMM 'Monthly' Remix Competition -> Round 6 -> DMX Krew

Beneboi won Round 5 a couple of weeks ago, with a nice track although it kindof won by default because it was the only entry for round 5 (lol). Technically he was supposed to pick a source track for Round 6 from this poll. But I haven't heard from him for a while, and he's already picked source tracks several times before. He's also been banned from WATMM so I figure in this case I'll just choose the track to keep this thing moving.

So I'll go for the most-voted one from the poll which was I'm All Alone by DMX Krew. its from the 1997 Rephlex album Ffressshh!. Here it is on YouTube:

Here's the adjusted Simple Rules:

Simple Rules v1.5:

- its a remix competition

- we're taking remix in the very broadest sense of the word

- voting will be anonymous

- we can do it with threads and polls and PMs, for now. Maybe we'll build a site later.

- while round 6 is running, everyone can nominate, and then vote for, source tracks for round 7

- (a maximum of 3 source track nominations per person)

- the winner of round 6 chooses the source track for round 7 from the top 3 voted-for source tracks

- anyone can enter, but it makes it easier for me if they have a watmm username

- unless we get 6 or more submissions, this will be the last round (for now)

Round 6 starts now. If you want to submit a track, please PM it to me (or email to mail@koanotic.org) by 23:00 GMT on Tuesday 14th July.

After that we will have 1 week of voting, and then we'll be moving on to round 7, hopefully. However we've had a few patchy rounds this year so I'm only going to do Round 7 if Round 6 gets six or more submissions. (anyone else who wants to is welcome to take over though)

Nominations for round 7 source tracks

If you want to suggest/nominate a source track for Round 7, please post the track title and artist name in this thread sometime in the next 2 weeks. Then I will collate them and make a poll that will run for the subsequent 2 weeks. Everyone will then be able to vote for the nominated tracks.

Then the winner of Round 6 picks a track from the top 3 of that source-track poll ... if we get enough remix submissions to carry on, that is.

It says they're due on July 14, in about 4 weeks time.

guess i'll say it this thread too. i reckon having one artist per round would be better than one track.

um ... its an ok idea I guess. It might be a bit too broad. The challenge of remixing one particular track is quite different to just doing whatever with some samples from a particular artist. Also, if the artist is familiar like 'squarepusher' or something then a lot of us will recognise the samples, but if its someone less well known like 'Erlend Oye' then we all have to go and do research at last.fm, and it will be hard for anyone to tell what samples have been used by each entrant. It would all become pretty arbitrary in that case.

Nominate 'all/any songs by X' if you want, and then I'll put it in the poll and see how it does.

well i only suggested it because even tho i like the track, i'd be more up for remixing other dmx krew tracks. so i thought maybe others might be the same.. and you're considering stopping

there hasn't been an aphex, squarepusher, etc. track so far has there?

but i mean, if there was a squarepusher remix competition, it might be a bit more of an event

we did AFX last round and only 1 person entered, admittedly the track was Pigeon St though.

When we did Brian Wilson we got 8 really awesome entries.

the discussion about which tracks to remix could go on forever (e.g see Joyex's original thread) - everyone has different opinions about what would be the best sort of thing. Some people think non electronic tracks are more interesting, some think we should be remixing old school techno, some people think we should remix tracks that have separated out sample-packs so that a more literal re-mix can be done.

At the moment we're trying nominations and polling to decide, so suggest whatever you reckon and we can put it to the vote. No-one has nominated squarepusher yet, so maybe suggest one of his tracks?

if this project fizzles out, I might try something else later in the year - e.g. ask for remixes of tracks from a specific well known album and then put it out on a CD-R. (If that can be done legally, I'm not sure.)

You seem to have ideas about what sort of tracks would generate a lot of interest. So if you name a track (or even just an artist), I can put it in the poll for the round-7-source-track and see how interested people are in remixing it. Or did you just want to discuss remixing on a theoretical level? : )
