The Shimmering Hour

Recommended Posts

Today I went into Sister Ray on Berwick St and found Wisp's The Shimmering Hour on their 'Sister Ray Recommends' rack:

I'm not sure exactly when it got released, but I think it was pretty recently, since the beginning of June. Its been a long wait, about 12 months of delay and strange rumours. Although there is already a 50-page thread about it in the New Releases section, I thought the phenomenon of Wisp being on Rephlex deserved its own thread here.

For those watmm newcomers and lurkers who don't know, Wisp is a watmmer from way back. Here's been here as long as I can remember, posting tracks in EKT-YLC and releasing stuff on Net Labels like Theo's now-defunt TavCom and Earstoke. Then he was signed to sublight in 2005, and there was also a nice watmm-nificant moment when RDJ played one of Wisps Selected Ambient Works remixes in one of his DJ sets around that time.

WATMM was (or arguably still is) a Rephlex fan site, so to have one of our own members release an LP on Rephlex deserves some kind of celebration. I think the idea of Wisp Listening Parties was suggested, but I don't know if any have been organised.

In summary: Wisp being on Rephlex is like ... um ... a Beatles groupie being pulled out of the audience at a stadium gig and ending up getting married to all four of them, ... or something like that ...

i was pretty impressed when i saw how many listeners wisp has on last.fm, around 43,000 which is around the same amount if not more than most of the other rephlex acts.

edit: my intention is not to pit one rephlex act against another but i feel like Wisp has been so prominent on the internet that in a lot of ways has exceeded the popularity of artists who normally only get the rephlex promotional treatment (and were relatively unknown previously)

I purchased this album using actual money.

I just wanted to let everyone know.

oh shit really? i bought it with monopoly money

yeah, I should have done that...but the thought of Wisp crying, wiping the tears away with crappy fake money, and wishing he had enough to buy a hotel on Leicester Square was too much to bear.

I strongly agree about prominence and the internet. Yeah it has damaged and changed how the music industry works but it also has alot of positives when it comes to exposure and success. Basically if its good enough people find it, talk about it, and it grows from there.

thanks guys, and cheers for posting that pic, zazen. I have yet to see the album in any record stores around here, but then again, I live in Niagara Falls.

As far as buying records directly from me, well... I don't have any copies to spare at the moment! The copies that I did have of The Shimmering Hour pretty much went directly to friends & family, and kept a few for myself. When my personal stock replenishes, I will see what I can do. On the other hand, I have a few copies of some of the older releases, but not a load of them. I know a few people have expressed interest (particularly encey), but drop me a PM if you want to get something directly from me and I will see what I have left maybe we can work something out(not very much to be honest).

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.
