Guest joshier
Being born in the internet age, a lot of my specific descriptive words are learnt through websites and books. I often know the words to describe a particular thing, but lack the way to pronounce it. Sometimes I'll be around others and they'll correct me, however those people aren't the ones I learnt the word from and so I don't know if I'm wrong in the pronunciation of it. A lot of words are learnt through talking in person with your friends, so essentially your vocabulary is moulded around those typical phrases, sayings and words to describe the majority of topics. Sometimes it bugs me because people think I don't know what I'm talking about because I don't say the word correctly - it's because I've never heard anyone say it in my life before. Guest Wall Bird
You could always learn the international phonetic alphabet to help with that: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_phonetic_alphabet A good number of Wiki articles include the pronunciation at the beginning of each one. Edit: Looks like Dese Manz Hatin beat me to it. kokoon
yeah, not a long time ago i spoke with a french guy. we both pronounced english words totally differently. i think i was right most of the time though. it got me thinking, i probably pronunce a lot of english words wrong. but i guess it's very different with me, as i rarely speak english (like maybe once every two months or even less) Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/46636-vocabulary/#findComment-1068007 Share on other sites

Fred McGriff
thank someone when they correct you. and remember it. eventually it will all get ironed out. dont be afraid to be ignorant when speaking to someone. everyone is ignorant. how you deal with your ignorance is a marker of intelligence. Fred McGriff
and fyi proust is pronounced proost, that's always a good one to know when you're talking with well read pretentious individuals. knowing that, it's also fun to pronounce it proust and bait them into correcting you, then looking at them blankly like they're talking about a different author. cichlisuite
queue. for a long time i thought people are talking about a letter. and it didn't make sense to me... in general is weird how many words in english have several meanings, or some that are pronounced the same way, but have completely different meaning. i'm learning french and german, but i find english to be the easiest. some phrases stick in my head and associate themselves to a certain concept, so that it can be addressed by simple, catchy couple-of-words :) i think this phenomena is the main reason why people segway into jargon speach, full of foreign mashed-up, trendy words. it's almost like as local language gets deformed... and then you switch cnn to a local news channel, and the words are there. same. like keywords. passwords. trigger-words... ugh..lol Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/46636-vocabulary/#findComment-1068067 Share on other sites
Guest Iain C
It's not that they don't understand you, it's that they don't want to talk to you. Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/46636-vocabulary/#findComment-1068147 Share on other sites
