Speed Demos

Recommended Posts

Does anyone watch speed runs? Is that the most pathetic thing I could be doing? Watching a recording of someone else play a game?

I put on Zelda speed runs several times a week in the background, I think just for the nostalgia of the BGM but also the SFX. I wouldn't feel as weird if I knew someone else did that, too, but I somehow doubt it ...

I watch speedruns and tool-assisted speedruns (aka TAS) occassionally, particularly those for Metroid. TAS videos are more interesting, even if it is a cheaper way to exploit bugs. The results are always interesting, because the games are never beaten in the way they are supposed to. You should watch the TAS for Ocarina of Time, if you are patient and know the game's sequence.

lol encey, you started a thread about speedruns in like 2005, which got me into them, as i recall. maybe someone else started that thread? anyway, yes, i've watched hundreds and cannot figure out why they're so addictively entertaining. i guess it's the analogue of sitting next to your friend on a couch and watching him totally destroy a game; the skill is what makes it fun to watch

I just watched the Opposing Force speed demo and it's quite impressive but every now and then moves are made that are almost too impressive to be believable.

Tool-assisted speedruns are for scrubs.

Legit bros do speedruns on the original platform, no emulators or tricks.

Fine, fine...

I really dig this speedrun of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 beaten in 6 minutes 23 seconds.

Can anyone explain what happens when he does that jump-glitch trick? Or should I call it the "yahoooo"-trick?

Two-thirds through it. The beginning was one of my favorite parts, when he crosses the entire world in the dead of night and blindly navigates the desert!

speeddemosarchive.com is like my favorite site. I'll take this opportunity to plug my own speed run, which is on their site:

Battletoads (without warping)

Oh, and yea, TAS are not the real deal, and i refuse to watch them...a lot of times, they destroy the popularity of the authentic speed runs, because people that don't know anything about games would rather watch those....It's like watching a computer program compete in the olympics instead of real people....

You speed-ran Battletoads? Holy shit. That game is killer.

I like both speed demos and TASs. TASs are particularly fantastic when it would involve a superhuman level of dexterity, like the Gradius runs or the SMB3 Boss Ship shenanigans.
