im a big time purest when it comes to chiptunes. meaning that if someone makes a song without any nod or reference to a specific videogame system and its just all over the fucking place with just too many sounds i find it pretty shitty.

Part of the reason i love original NES music is because composers were forced to compose in 4 channels only with no polyphony unless they wanted to take up a 2nd channel for it. Too many 'chiptune' composers i find mix too many modern sounds with their videogames, there are very few people i've hear that put on modern twists that do it properly like Cylob and Team Dyobi. there are others like Proswell though that i absolutely cannot stand, to me thats very very bad chiptune attempts.

i find most of the best chiptune music is found in emulation circles where people actually make their own NSF (nes music) and SPC (snes music) files , i also listen to a lot of stuff made by Adlib/fm synth composers from the late 80s downloaded from the net.

chiptunes are nice. i like scene-style, old school chiptunes.

post some good ones. i've got a shitload but a shitload of them are horrid and i'm trying to go through them picking out the ones that are worthwhile.

well your first rule of thumb is most of the horrid ones dont come from actual videogames, usually real chiptune music from actual games

here are my favorites

do you remember this -

i think Luke Vibert is heavily influenced by the music in Marioworld, all those portamento cheesy harmonica and string sounds he does even on Plug drum and bass for papa i hear them, and this game definitely came out before.

i never had a commodore64 as a kid so forgive me for ignoring the SID world, i love it though the sounds really do make me a little bit hard, it just has no nostalgia factor for me (which is a huge part of why i think people dig chiptunes)

A friend of mine actually thinks that Squarepusher used some Super Mario World sounds in a couple of his songs. One of Squarepusher's releases is called 'Dragon Disk 2' and one of the tracks was called 'Yoshi' but, iirc, that was made by a separate artist.

EDIT: But then again, I found the sound a weapon in 'Turok: Dinosaur Hunter' made was the same sound in Aphex Twin's 'Green Calx'.

I'm gonna go ahead and be the black sheep and say I don't care for chip tunes.

There are many talented artists out there, but I think too many of the other type rely on the chip tune sound as a gimmick "oh this is cool, it sounds like nintendo."

I've messed around with sid chips and yeah the novelty of recreating all those memorable lazer and explosions sounds is enjoyable, but beyond that I think that composers are just being lazy with sound design and relying too much on nostalgia.
