I've just had an email from a D&B label

So basically i've been writing various types of track for about 3 years now, but only competantly for a year if that.

Recently i've been getting really into the drumfunk/choppage style of D&B (Breakage, Nebula, Equinox etc) and especially the stuff coming out on Subtle Audio.

www.subtleaudiorecordings.com

Just last night i picked up a Myspace email from the head guy who releases under the name Code, saying he was really impressed by one of my tracks, Smouldering Fury, which you can listen to here, and mentioned the possibility of putting some of my stuff out on the lable in the near future.

I feel i'm way over my head here, this is a lable that i really look up to and I just thought it would be of value to ask some of the WATMM members for some advice here.

I can obviously understand that a label such as Subtle would want alot of consistency in the stuff that they get sent, but that's about as much as I can understand about the process of being on someones roster, copyrights and all the rest of it.

Wisp: you're obviously clued up, Awepittance, and I think Brian Ellis too? My memory lets me down, but I know a fair few of the users on here release alot of music on various labels.....this is a thread for them really, any advice will be well appreciated.

Thanks

I don't have any advice different from everyone else's... Just do it. What exactly do you want to know?

Nice tunes, by the way. :ok:

I'm not really too sure what I want to know really, i suppose knowledge about the process of sending tracks off for mastering and all that i.e. if you're a label wanting to press some records, how do you want the good delivered?

I'll have to get in touch with the bloke really but I came to WATMM because none of my mates produce at such a level as these guys do

Going to buy myself a new computer and the new Ableton, and start properly grafting (no more WATMM, spending time in the pub, playing FIFA etc  )

I'm a long way off but i'll try and post tracks on here every now and again, thanks for the kind words guys

The mixes sound good. What do you use at the moment? headphones / monitors?

Some people don't send their tunes to a mastering engineer to save money, but its recomended.

You should understand the agreement first and you should get a lawyer.

Btw, Wisp posts here?

the way i got it worked out is that we mix down the tracks, the label does the rest (mastering, promo, etc.) and the royalties/cash/whatever is split 50/50... if youre gonna do it that way just make sure that they send you a lossless file of your track after their mastering, just to be sure they dont fuck your shit up...

I've not had anything formal put to me yet, I think i'm a long way off producing that this sort of music consistently, but certainly knowledge of how such labels do business would be helpful.

I produce with some unbranded yet decent monitors, although i don't have a subwoofer.

Wisp is on here - Thanks Robert Moses i think

I would say don't change anything. If they want you it's because you do what you do. I mean if you feel really deficient in some technical area like monitors or mixing or whatever then fine ... but if the tracks sound good, they sound good.

This track is real fresh, btw. Nice job

where do i know you from?

you a friend of waga's?

Myspace i think can be pretty impersonal and quite hard to keep track of.

I do believe we are friends though.

lol just logged in and seen 45 plays during the course of today, fuck!

beautiful use of samples on that track. Yeah very pluggish. Shitty myspace quality always clouds my judgement, I can't tell if I like the mixing but if there is anything wrong with it, it sounds like it would be an easy fix. Maybe its the high end and punch in the breaks, maybe it is the myspace encoding, I can't really tell.

They'll let you know unless they don't know what they're doing. Don't sweat it too much. ;)

the more you can bring to a label, the less they can take away. be wary of recoupable expenses. good music btw.
