I want to try knob twiddling

So I've been wanting to try this for a while

I have at my diposal

Sony Acid Pro 7 w/ SoundForge

Casio WK-1800 w/ floppy drive

A 1977 Gibson MK35 acousitc guitar

A tumpet

A broken snare drum

A tiny Casio PT10

A shitty mic

and lots of time

I'm waiting for a set of MIDI cables for my keyboard and I wanted to know more about interfacing my keyboard with my computer, like how to record/sample, make beats, etc...

I guess my question is what do I do after I plug the cables in?

Umm... that seems like a pretty wide open question. You might as well have asked "What kind of music should I make?" That's going to be up to you to decide, and once you do let us know so we can give you some pointers.

With that being said, since you have so many acoustic instruments at your disposal, perhaps you'd be interested in recording or sampling them. To get in the spirit of certain electronic musics, try to create as unusual of a sound you can on each of them before recording and capture it with your mic in an equally unique way to accentuate it's sonic character. Take those recordings and then try manipulating them for some truly unique sounds. I'm afraid I dont know anything about the hardware and software you have available so I'll only be able to offer less specific and more theoretical ideas to help you out.

do you have a MIDI interface for your computer?

you need to connect the MIDI OUT of your keyboard to the MIDI IN of your midi interface and vice versa.

I don't exactly know how the DAW you are using works, but just make sure the settings in there correspond with how you connected the MIDI cables (so MIDI OUT from keyboard to MIDI IN from PC etc.)

to record I think you need to press the 'Arm Record' button of the appropriate track(s) and then press the 'Record' button up in the transport controls

i guess it's been said but i'll say it again:

you don't really even need the keyboard to input notes and you could even just mic the keyboard or plug the audio out into your soundcard's line-in. if you have a coke can, a mic, and a tracker you can make some cool tracks. it's really best to make what you can with what you have and from that figure out what changes in your setup will make life easier. it's a great mental workout to do more with less and you'll be better for it.

I see so less is more and I should put a can around my mic?

I did find some MIDI cables with a USB so I wanna give it a go.

So far I've been tinkering with acid and putting some beats and samples together, I'm still trying to learn the ins and outs of the software

Is it bad if I just take percussion samples and paste them on a timeline? of coarse I would modify them for a more unique sound.
