although this isn't cannon (in star wars novels as opposed to films), the explanation for that is he took a dangerous shortcut very close to a cluster of black holes, which required a serious ship and serious pilot -- kind of like winning a downhill race by turning off the road and just driving down raw turf to cut out some turns, at the risk of trashing your car.
