Guest chax
Donkumentary - VBS explores the North England donk scene, the absolute bottom of British musical culture. http://www.vbs.tv/watch/music-world/donk Raving in the Black Sea - As Europe's concerned, the Black Sea is pretty much the end of the earth. http://www.vbs.tv/watch/music-world/raving-in-the-black-sea Bananaz - This incredible film, “Bananaz” removes the secretive, mucky walls of Gorillaz, the cartoon band created by artist Jamie Hewlett & musician Damon Albarn, smashing down all artificial barriers to reveal the full and filthy details behind this awe-inspiring band. Audiences see just what director Ceri Levy saw over seven years of mayhemical creative madness… a lot of it too graphic for mortal eyes to behold…Bananaz is Levy's story of the partnership & community behind Gorillaz. He takes you into the studio and out onto the road with this virtual phenomenon, showing a part of Gorillaz never seen before - reality. As one radio interviewer puts it, "It's a parallel universe - these guys aren't in the band but they know the animated characters who are". Bananaz is an honest, often hilarious account of the working relationship between Albarn & Hewlett, and the rise to success with Gorillaz - from the initial embryonic conception through to global domination. Also in focus are many of the conspirators & collaborators that came along for the ride, including Dennis Hopper, De la Soul, D12, Ibrahim Ferrer, Bootie Brown, Dangermouse & more. Contains strong language. WARNING: Some footage in this film includes a strobing effect, which may affect viewers with photo-sensitive epilepsy and other such conditions. http://www.babelgum.com/browser.php#play|SEARCH,queryString:bananaz,order:MOST_RELEVANT|5,3018011 Amen Break - This fascinating, brilliant 20-minute video narrates the history of the "Amen Break," a six-second drum sample from the b-side of a chart-topping single from 1969. This sample was used extensively in early hiphop and sample-based music, and became the basis for drum-and-bass and jungle music -- a six-second clip that spawned several entire subcultures. Nate Harrison's 2004 video is a meditation on the ownership of culture, the nature of art and creativity, and the history of a remarkable music clip. Scratch - Scratch is a film that explores the world of the hip-hop DJ. From the birth of hip-hop, when pioneering DJ's began extending breaks on their party records (which helped inspire break dancing and rap), to the invention of scratching and beat-juggling vinyl, to its more recent explosion as a musical movement called turntablism, it's a story of unknown underdogs and serious virtuosos who have radically changed the way we hear, play and create music. The documentary opens with Grand Wizard Theodore (New York) telling the story of how he first introduced scratching. Throughout the documentary, several artist explains how he/she was introduced to the field of hip-hop and scratch while providing stories and anecdotes of their personal experiences. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGrchxm_BBU The Alchemists of Sound - The BBC's Radiophonic Workshop was set up in 1958, born out of a desire to create 'new kinds of sounds'. Alchemists of Sound looks at this creative group from its inception, through its golden age when it was supplying music and effects for cult classics like Doctor Who, Blake's Seven and Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, and charts its fading away in 1995 when, due to budget cuts, it was no longer able to survive. There are interviews with composers from the Workshop, as well as musicians and writers who have been inspired by the output. Great archive footage of the Workshop and its machinery is accompanied by excerpts of the, now cult, TV programmes that featured these sounds. RiP! A Remix Manifesto - Web activist and filmmaker Brett Gaylor explores issues of copyright in the information age, mashing up the media landscape of the 20th century and shattering the wall between users and producers. The film’s central protagonist is Girl Talk, a mash-up musician topping the charts with his sample-based songs. But is Girl Talk a paragon of people power or the Pied Piper of piracy? Creative Commons founder, Lawrence Lessig, Brazil’s Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and pop culture critic Cory Doctorow are also along for the ride. A participatory media experiment, from day one, Brett shares his raw footage at opensourcecinema.org, for anyone to remix. This movie-as-mash-up method allows these remixes to become an integral part of the film. With RiP: A remix manifesto, Gaylor and Girl Talk sound an urgent alarm and draw the lines of battle. Which side of the ideas war are you on? DiG! - Tracks the tumultuous rise of two talented musicians, Anton Newcombe, leader of the Brian Jonestown Massacre; and Courtney Taylor, leader of the Dandy Warhols; dissecting their star-crossed friendship and bitter rivalry. Both are hell-bent on staging a self-proclaimed revolution of the music industry. Through their loves and obsessions, gigs and recordings, arrests and death threats, uppers and downers--and ultimately to their chance at a piece of the profit-driven music business--how each handles his stab at success is where the relationship frays and burns. http://www.veoh.com/browse/videos/category/horror/watch/v10632606P8Ajs7YR Jandek On Corwood - “The longest-running, weirdest, loneliest enigma is popular music is a guy from Texas who calls himself Jandek.” (Dougals Wolk, Providence Phoenix) 25 years, 35 albums and not a single live show or public appearance. The documentary film Jandek on Corwood definitively explores the most intriguing mystery in modern music. Featuring revealing interviews, evocative imagery and one of the most bizarre and compelling soundtracks in film history, Jandek on Corwood will challenge the viewer’s conception of music, Art and the nature of celebrity. Jandek on Corwood is the definitive documentary about one of modern music’s greatest enigmas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vTtQg6qIIk The Devil and Daniel Johnston - As a reclusive teenager growing up in New Cumberland, VA, Johnston began showing signs of unusual artistic ability at an early age. He religiously recorded his thoughts and stories onto cassette tapes, directed intuitive Super-8 films staring his siblings and created expressive comic book-style drawings in the basement of his family's home. After running off and joining a carnival, he landed in Austin, Texas, broke and alone. It was there he began to hone his musical career, recording folk songs on a series of homemade, lo-fi cassettes, which Daniel handed out free to fans, friends and journalists in the early 80s. Just as he was beginning to make a name for himself, his inner demons began to surface and Daniel¹s ongoing struggle with manic depression became more and more evident in his songs and drawings. Now in his mid 40s, Daniel Johnston has grown into a prolific visual artist. His expressions have earned him worldwide recognition and critical praise, producing international exhibits where he continues to sell his vibrant and intimate sketches. This is the story of talented and tormented Daniel Johnston, a manic-depressive genius singer/ songwriter/ artist, revealed in this portrait of madness, creativity and love. http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMTQwNjYwODg=.html i know i'm missing a ton, post'em if you have'em Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/47264-thread-for-music-documentaries/ Share on other sites

Guest chax
Soundtrack to War - Soundtrack to War showcases spontaneous music performances by a striking cast of battle weary. Performances made without rehearsal, under the blaring Iraqi sun, with a destroyed city, the distraction of gunfire and bursting mortar shells forming a frightening backdrop. American culture came into Iraq, wired into its tanks and helicopters - a live soundtrack to war, with lyrics such as Let The Bodies Hit The Floor, Round Out, The Tank and Bombs over Baghdad, being memorised by every soldier and forever linked to the violent events they accompanied. As the war extended into a second year, many started writing and performing their own songs. It was rock, rap & roll. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7548006816297243731&ei=o_9WSt-gDZOEqwLQpLGpDQ&q=Soundtrack+to+War&dur=3 Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/47264-thread-for-music-documentaries/#findComment-1082993 Share on other sites
Guest chax
Once Upon A Time In Norway - The bloody story of Black Metal’s resurgence in Norway during the early 90’s, with killings, church burnings, and corpse paint, has been told before, first and foremost in Michael Moynihan’s “Lords of Chaos” and Gavin Baddeley’s “Lucifer Rising”, both recommended reading, and in Sam Dunn’s documentary “Metal – A Headbanger’s Journey”. If anything, “Once Upon…” makes it obvious that these weren’t just kids out on a rampage, these young people had a philosophical, artistic agenda, however fucked up you may judge it to be. This is definitely a must for anyone interested in the extreme side of metal. Guest chax
GLOBAL METAL - In GLOBAL METAL, directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn set out to discover how the West`s most maligned musical genre - heavy metal - has impacted the world`s cultures beyond Europe and North America. The film follows metal fan and anthropologist Sam Dunn on a whirlwind journey through Asia, South America and the Middle East as he explores the underbelly of the world`s emerging extreme music scenes from Indonesian death metal to Chinese black metal to Iranian thrash metal. GLOBAL METAL reveals a worldwide community of metalheads who aren`t just absorbing metal from the West ... they`re transforming it. Creating a new form of cultural expression in societies dominated by conflict, corruption and mass-consumerism. http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=9A4DE000729E31EE&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/47264-thread-for-music-documentaries/#findComment-1083005 Share on other sites
