Does anyone feel the same way?

I just uninstalled all of the native instruments software. I hadn't purchased any of it but I had all the latest stuff. You name, it, battery 3, fm8, the lot! The fact was though, I couldn't stand them.

They were so slow, resourceful and just annoying to work with. My tiny free VST's in comparison seemed to piss all over them. Perhaps it was NI's copy protection making it slow or hard to work with but I'll never use them again unless they streamlime them all.

Opinions?

I don't know if this is necessarily what you're talking about but I don't feel like I'm smart enough to use any plugins that have more than 10 knobs.

NI makes some really unique synthesizers, so I don't imagine I'll be abandoning them anytime soon. They can be pretty intensive on my computer, though (Powerbook G4). Luckily, Logic has the freeze function to cut back on CPU usage. It can be frustrating to try and make synthesized music strictly on a computer sometimes due to a lack of processing - pianos never lag - but I always have to keep in mind that it used to take days, or even weeks to render the processes that we now do instantly with synthesizers, so I've come to terms with it.

i would never ditch my n.i. synths/sampler

they make noises free synths dont come close to

cause you're not being creative

free synths are great but i don't care much what the original synth is, the process of creating effects, shaping the sound, juxtaposing it with another synth/sound, maybe bouncing and reversing, pitching, etc.. is what creates the end result.

There is some degree of truth to what you are saying, but I disagree.

A good illustration of why:

ya I find that NI stuff is generally really user un-friendly. things are not intuitive, waaaaay too complicated for simple simple things (like reversing ONE sample OMMFG*&^). They are nice ya, but generally they slow me down, and that's irritating. Like in Kontakt if you double click inside of the sampler modules it closes....that fucking pisses me off. I get better results from my SK-1 no fucking shit. I tried to get into reactor, but it's also fucking unintuitive and basically NOT FUN. I'd rather use bidule or PD if I'm doing anything like that. Fuck that shit.

I think my need for simple, fast and free synths transpired in a dream I had the other night. I was flying through the air in some kind of game/music composer and everything I wanted I could have instantly. Pretty cool but yeah, I think on the whole NI are going down the pan.

Don't get me wrong, most of their software is stunning but every time I'm on their website they have special deals which are really shockingly low in price, it's really sad. I think they could do better if they made a light version of each VST and sold them at a very low price to hit a particular market rather than loosing money from their big invested instruments.

battery2, fm7 -- very happy there, haven't really considered upgrading.

massive -- thought it was a bloat tick at first but i came around

at the end of the day it's about what i like using. i mostly use desktops and as such CPU is only a concern towards the endgame when i have 50 vsts running... and when i'm that far along i feel comfortable just bouncing it. when i'm just starting a track, it's pretty hard to find any vst that cramps my style.

I liked fm7 more than 8. seems faster.

what processer do you use?

I thought they were doing that to get more people to buy instead of pirate

I fucking love using big synths like reaktor. When I compose serious tracks, I usually stay simple, but big synths are great just on their own, and help me spark sound ideas. NI stuff is designed by ridiculously smart people who are some of the best synth designers in the world. I would hardly say that using NI stuff is "not creative", just because it is easy to get good results from such synths.

if you don't want to learn how to use it , ok - very understood, but you can't blame the synth for it. i did the same thing with Reaktor simply bc i didn't want to learn how to build every single component and stuff but you can work around it. it might be a way of learning in itself, but try starting with simple patches and tweak them to see how they work. the synths and samplers are some of the most flexible out there.

I can tell this convo is getting extremely IDM fast.

Its one of those "yeah well if you don't make your own VST's and write your own sequencer then its not creative" discussions. Then someone will mention how Mozart is a noob for using presets. Finally after 10 pages everyone will agree to just "use whatever" except for 2 people who will continue to argue about whether FL studio is professional or not.

lol yes, probably

so... good, free vsti...

iblit

mda dx10

synth1

oatmeal

anything else?

i downloaded xhip the other day, might get into it later

if some people here are seriously having trouble using Battery as a drum sampler because its 'too un user friendly' than honestly there is no hope for you. i will just throw that out there right now

also this whole notion of free vsts are superior to commercial vsts is lol-worthy. If you espouse this you might just be too unresourceful to download cracks and pirated versions of commercial software for comparison. And don't get me wrong i'm not saying commercial VSTs are superior either, i'm saying that it usually doesn't fucking matter if it's free or not, something can be free and be a piece of shit just like something that costs $1500 can also be a piece of shit. I use plenty of free and pay VSTS, so i do get a laugh out of this idea of 'i ONLY use free vsts' huh? why would you limit yourself like that in such a non sensical way?

Yeah I totally agree on the Mozart thing.
