Where's the line?

I am curious. At what point does a boss cross a line with his/her employee that can be illegal through the courts?

The boss at my part time job wants me sacked because sales are down, and today he was saying stuff like "other people in here say they can't rely on you, that they can't trust you with a project" (which is utter bullshit). Then he's saying things like "You need to sort your life out".

Most other guys there think he's a wanker too.

Anyone know any legal stuff related to this?

First of all, if you are implementing the advice you have received from watmm in your daily life, then your boss is probably right. So here are the steps:

1. Stop taking advice from watmm.

the fact that your boss can fire you if he doesn't like you is what keeps you from talking back to him. not liking you is all the reason he needs to fire you, and there is no legal action you can take against him just because he is unsatisfied with your performance, no matter weather it's justified or not. welcome to capitalism, bitch.

an employer can fire you whenever the hell they feel like as long as it's not because you're black or short or pregnant or some shit. shape up or ship out son

Why do you think this? From what I know there has to be a reason.

the reason is you can't be trusted etc etc etc, so hat is right. nothing legal, just don't be a pussy.

From what I know he needs an actual reason to fire you. There have been many cases where someone was fired because he/she wasn't liked, and he/she filed an "ethics violation" and won. But I'm in Canada. I would think that the UK would have stronger laws about this though.

From my experience, when boss's are pissed, they just like to blame people whether or not that person deserves it. It's easier for them to think their coworkers are screwing up than just thinking "that's life". They want to feel like there is an answer to the problem. Just try to work hard, and hopefully your boss will notice.

Then again, maybe you're about to get fired.

He has threatened me before, saying if i don't work fulltime I'll get fired but that was 3 months ago now. he wants to fire me because sales are down and he sees me as useless. it's funny though because i'm actually a fucking good worker and i'm not saying that because I'm pompus, the jobs pretty easy and anyone could do it. they don't even pay me much and I'm frequently asked to do X because I'm good at certain special skills no one else can do.

usually to get canned for a performance related issue, there needs to be proof on file that your overall performance at work has been slipping. this could be measured by looking at tardiness, not meeting your sales quota, or your ability to work within the company to meet a number of company related goals. where I work, they have to give me a written warning before firing me. once I sign off on it, then they can fire me for any other little thing that I fuck up on and I can't come back and sue for wrongful termination.

of course if your company is not performing and they have to let you go due to no fault of your own (i.e. your position is no longer necessary), then that is considered downsizing and you can file for unemployment benefits.
