six
So due to some fortuitous events, I have 4 weeks of vacation saved up at my job and a free plane ticket anywhere in the lower 48 states. I never take any vacation time so I thought it would be fun to do a spontaneous trip with a friend. I'll probably be flying somewhere next Friday (the 24th) and staying for a week or so. So I'd love a city that is easy to get around on foot or by public transportation with a lot of fun shit to do. I've been in New York for a few years so I'm a little jaded but I grew up in the country so I could totally get down with a small city that's having a festival or something fun. Would love some ideas about cool places to visit. Places I have already been to and am not planning on going to: -Most of the east coast -Chicago -Much of Texas -Much of California Right now my top idea is flying into Seattle and then taking a train up to Vancouver (is this cheap/easy to do?) but I'm welcome to any suggestions of fun places to visit. Help me WATMM, you're my only hope! awepittance
go to the Big Island on hawaii , one of the best trips i've ever taken but also very expensive. renting a car is absolutely required but you can find a pretty cheap room to rent in someone's house down in Kona or Hilo. I noticed when i was there a lot of ~$300 a week rentals. clearest water and most desolate beautiful beaches i have been to in my life. took a 20 minute hike down to an empty white sand beach off the freeway and swam with 5 sea turtles about 10 feet into the water. If you are lucky you can also see live lava flowing, when we went we didn't see any but it happens so often that you have a very good chance of witnessing new earth being formed. or go to Yellowstone park in Montana or Wyoming, both states offer amazing pieces of the park but you would again definitely have to rent a car. Hotel rates a relatively cheap if you don't stay near the old faithful geyser. Camping is awesome there but i would not recommend it unless you are down for an intense nature experience. I have friends who were chased by herds of wild bison and had howling wolves encircle their campsite last time. You also need to take some bear encounter training to be prepared well Edited July 15, 2009 by Awepittance Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Hide awepittance's signature Hide all signatures Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/47398-us-vacation-ideas/#findComment-1085733 Share on other sites

Have heard wonderful things about Yellowstone as well and plan on visiting sometime, but I'd rather be in a somewhat urban environment for this trip. dr lopez
it totally depends where in new orleans. french quarter is absolutely unbearable. dirty, smelly, and unbelievably tourist-y. REALLY not worth your time. I actually enjoyed algiers (south of the river) more than the true city, although the garden district is an amazing place to walk around it. but surely you can do better than New Orleans? I adore both cities but have been to both many times. I've never been remotely near the Pacific NW so I feel like Vancouver might be cool. Brandi_B
Quote Seattle and then taking a train up to Vancouver That sounds pretty nice to me right there. I say go with that. I've never been to either of these places but a lot of friends that have lived there/ visited there say it's a must, especially Vancouver. Or what about this Portland, Seattle, Vancouver? All very cool places... I googled that phrase and this very cool trip planner thing came up: http://travel.yahoo.com/trip-view-1138038-portland_coast_vancouver_seattle U could go visit zelah in Portland and bike your heart out!
