whats everyones thoughts on charlie brooker?

i had ignored him for ages but was won over by newswipe which is on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=6DD223447015D017&search_query=newswipe. Am downloading screenwipe as we speak. i know its on youtube but i want to watch it on tv.

his new show 'you have been watching' appears to be a game show and could be terrible but of the two episodes so far, I thought it was pretty good.

i know he did nathan barley with chris morris, which i still think is great.

his wire documentary wasnt very indepth

what else has he done?

sometimes i cringe when he tries to be funny/shouty but overall i'm a fan.

oh and do you like my new av? can we add it to the mb emoticons?

He generally makes me laugh, I read the Guardian columns regularly. His TV stuff is pretty funny as well, Screenwipe was pretty consistently great up until the last series when they changed the format slightly, still plenty of LOLs though. Newswipe was similarly mixed for me... Oddly enough despite liking both Brooker and Morris, I couldn't stand Nathan Barley one bit. It probably has a lot to do with hating that twat from the Mighty Boosh, but I really didn't think the writing was up to much either.

I forgot about Dead Set! I actually missed out on all but the final episode, but I really enjoyed it. I love Kevin Eldon. I always meant to catch up with the rest of it on 4OD but never got around to it...

I didn't like it because I read TVGoHome long before it was ever turned into a TV series, and it just didn't match my expectations or how I saw the character and tone of it.

I completely forgot that it was in that column until I thought about it. To be honest I think developing a 6-episode series from a series of paragraph-length comedy writings was always a bad idea.

It was however far better than the Unnovations programme... eurgh!

Yeah, although Dead Set has some darkly comic moments, it's not a comedy - anyone expecting a Shaun Of The Dead-style program might be disappointed. I thought it was very good - and although it's something you see in films quite often, to my knowledge it's the first serialised zombie horror for television.

I'll tell you what there wasn't - any decent jokes. It just didn't make me laugh. The old website used to have me howling with laughter each time it was updated, and Nathan Barley just didn't. It was surreal, "dark" comedy of the kind that's flooded this country over the past decade and I don't really care for it in the slightest - same goes for the Boosh, Green Wing, Nighty Night or anything like that. Nathan Barley is better than all of those programmes though.

anyone watching 'you have been watching'?

Yes, I've been watching it. I also went to see the recording of the pilot episode at the BBC (it's a channel 4 show, but for some reason it was filmed at the BBC). I heard that they were going to change the format for the actual series, but that evidently didn't happen, as the only difference I can see is that they had 4 guests in the pilot episode instead of 3.

I thought it was funny, and as channel 4 quiz shows go, it's pretty good...but I'm not too keen on the format, and to be honest, I find the guests mainly just dilute the Charlie-Brookerness of Charlie Brooker. I think the quiz element gets in the way a bit, when I'd rather just hear an entertaining discussion about television.

Having said that, it's still a lot more enjoyable than a lot of shit that channel 4 pumps out in the name of entertainment..

it'd be great if was more like newsnight review. just discussing tv and being funny.

they seem to only be able to avoid 1 decent guest per show.

i hate it when charlie is about to be funny(scripted) and a guest interupts

I like Screenwipe. You Have Been Watching isn't too bad. He is excellent at taking an objective point of view on things which is quite rare in TV these days. There's literally a handful of programs I watch on TV, and Brooker's shows are never missed.

I think Mr. Brooker said that in hindsight he thought the show made Nathan Barley more a twat than a cunt !

Im really looking forward to Gameswipe, its about time the medium got a program that isnt fronted by some twat who thinks its clever to talk in 1980's skateboard speak. Though saying that, I miss Emily Booth.

me too

didn't think much of the you have been watching, one of the guests kept pissing me off. But Jamelia was sexy.

I'd rather see more Brooker written comedy or Screenburn style shows
