Who likes to circuit-bend?

Recommended Posts

I did a search and didn't see any topics like this.

Are there any circuit-benders here? If you don't know what that is, let me give you a wikipedia quote:

"Circuit bending is the creative short-circuiting of electronic devices such as low voltage, battery-powered guitar effects, children's toys and small digital synthesizers to create new musical or visual instruments and sound generators. Emphasizing spontaneity and randomness, the techniques of circuit bending have been commonly associated with noise music, though many more conventional contemporary musicians and musical groups have been known to experiment with "bent" instruments. Circuit bending usually involves dismantling the machine and adding components such as switches and potentiometers that alter the circuit."

I've made a bunch of instruments, and I was driven to make this post so I could share my most recent bent instrument, a Casio PT-100

There's also a youtube video of my demonstrating it:

Anybody else like to circuit-bend??

lol I like how you posted to wiki quote to "explain" to us what circuit bending is.

Yes, there are some benders here. I am not one personally, but expect you will get some replies from a choice few.

And read the rules.

I should probably try though, as I have a minimal amount of experience with some electronics from high school....

EDIT: Nice work on the casio!

If you're talking about the hotlinking.. It's ok when it's to my own website, right?

check out this Kawai R-50 circuit bent drum machine - got a modular style patch bay, looks wicked.

R50main-new.jpg

R50cockets-new.jpg

  Quote
The modifications for this machine are as follows:

20 way Drum Destruction patchbay: This is a minijack patchbay mounted on the front of the machine. When connections are made between the sockets using patch cables the sounds vomiting forth from the machine are transformed with ring modulation, chopping, distortion and all kinds of general wierdness. Each connection produces a different effect and multiple connections can be made at any one time for further percussion grinding options.

2X3 way patching multiples: Two sets of three sockets which are connected together internally. Basically each multiple allows you to connect one patchbay source to two destinations on the main patchbay further multiplying the sounds available.

2X Patchable Switches: these are two switches connected to two sockets each. They can be patched in line with any main patchbay connection to allow you to turn an effect on or off at the flick of a switch instead of having to repatch any cables.

a bargain at £90!

edit: fucking hell this sounds awesome! check out the mp3 demos:

paid 0$ for mine, would never pay more.

I don't discuss circuit bending unless I want help with technical things like real nice extra enhancements. Still working on stuff for my 505 I want to do. (ability to do live snare rolls on it with timer sending clicks straight to trigger of snare/bd etc.)

I know a couple of people that do some interesting circuit bent stuff, but it's just not for me, it wouldn't work with the kind of stuff I make.

for people that do it it's more about the action and less about the result. If you want to become a circuit bender to make musical instruments you'll lose interest real quick once you realize that most of the time it sounds like a blender having a fisting orgasm.

No, I got mine from a friend who didn't want it. There's lots of people out there who have them laying around their closet and basement and don't want them or know they're worth shit.

Also circuit-bending not to want to atleast see the results is in no-way true.
