lol, I never expected such a oddball confirmation of my own personal observation - as I mentioned in the other thread, I think street vendors and hookers are the most down-to-earth, "honest" people I've met here. Of course it's not true across the board, but many of the hookers here are simply what we'd call extremely independent and self-sufficient women in the west. For example, my (as of four days ago) ex-girlfriend (and ex-hooker) has traveled to Macao, Singapore, and Bahrain. Some other hookerfriends of hers traveled as far as Turkey. Imagine that. Most Chinese never get the opportunity to leave their country, and yet the hookers find ways to travel the entire globe plying their trade. They tend to be really bold, strong-willed, and interesting people.

I'll give you an interesting comparison. When I first arrived in China I had a translator who was still an undergrad, a brilliant young middle-class/upper-middle-class Chinese woman who learned Norewegian "for the hell of it." She's now in Geneva pursuing her graduate degree in international finance. Before she left, I asked her if she could hook me up for a date with any of her single classmates. She said sure, and a few days later contacted me on MSN - she said she wanted to introduce me to an attractive and well educated friend of hers. "But before we go any further," she said, "My friend has one question for you: what's your annual salary?" I was totally floored, and asked her "Is your friend a prostitute?" She felt insulted and ashamed; neither she nor her friend saw anything wrong with the question. I guess many middle-class chinese women are essentially raised to be gold diggers. I'm sure they would call it being pragmatic.

By contrast, my now ex-gf never asked me for a dime. I let her stay at my place for free and in exchange she cooked once in a while and did my laundry, but that was the extent of our quid pro quo. When she left, we didn't argue, she just informed me she had rented an apartment across town and was moving out. I was at work at the time, so she asked me if I wanted to come home to make sure she didn't take anything that wasn't hers. I said no, of course not, no problem. When I came home her stuff was gone, everything else was tidy, and there was fresh watermelon and grapes on the table. She's awesome, and by far one of the most honest women I've met.

no I think it applies to most of them, my ex-gf included. I think she has mild dissociative disorder, or she's just a hair-trigger nympho, lol. It's really funny, when she gets turned on by a guy she literally can't help herself, her eyes get all hungry and unearthly and her nostrils start dilating rhythmically. yeah it's just kind of funny - a friend of mine visited from the states once and I found out later that she came on to him, and he had to lock himself in the bathroom with a raging hardon, both extremely turned on by her and afraid of her at the same time. Of course she was the one who told me about it, laughing - she's honest, but not necessarily faithful! She was pretty literally "bewitching."
