Question about firefox update

Updated firefox and it says;

"Firefox 3.5 is the first browser to support open video formats, allowing movies to become part of today’s dynamic web pages without requiring a plug-in."

What does this actually mean? Because it doesn't seem to make any difference to anything but if I don't have to worry about which version of Flash I've got anymore that would be terrific

Unfortunately though, the major format providers (Adobe, Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc.) can't agree on a codec for the video, so video support in HTML 5 appears to be stalled, if not abandoned.

Yeah, since Microsoft wants their codecs to be used, video support is pretty much useless. And few developers will choose the video tag if they have to support multiple codecs. Although shrinking, Internet Explorer's market share is still stopping progress. Even with a market share of say 20%, they'd keep dragging on with their proprietary formats and stupid ideas. Microsoft should be banned from the internet.

It's not just Microsoft on this one,although of course they're pushing for silverlight.

Apple won't support it in Safari for some bullshit reason about patents (fuck software patents seriously).

Adobe obviously doesn't want flash to go away so they're fighting this, although since they're not a browser provider, I dunno why anyone would listen to them.

Good article about it here: http://www.streamingmedia.com/article.asp?id=11265
