Headphones, bass & monitors

Recommended Posts

Guest joshier

I'm going to have to get some speakers some time because headphones just don't give you a real sense of bass (you don't feel it in your chest, obviously).

shame though because i like producing stuff at night.

I used to think it would be fine but it's clearly evident that even with great headphones, bass is just never the same.

Anyone recommend any passive small-ish speakers that are ok for bass?

maybe some MR8's or so. Anything with an 8" woofer would be alright. Do note though that monotors are not designed to be bassy. If you just want bass, go get some book shelf speakers.

A professional solution would be to get a set of monitors and couple them with a powered sub. I used to have a 12" car sub built into a foot stool in my dorm room in college. lol. I'd rattle the ceiling tiles and the RA would come in all pissed and see my shitty little computer speakers and think he had the wrong guy. lol. golden.

I have a pair of KRK RP8 G2s that are pretty bassy, but tight enough to use as monitors. Some people say these have too much bass for a monitor, which is true, but I like using them anyways. Still better than using my ER4Ss(at least as far as sound staging goes, the ER4S earbuds still pick up better detail in the sound.) Using earbuds/headphones is Good for surgical understanding of the mix, but bad at translating the mix, because everything sounds so crystal clear on these earbuds that you can't tell how much the frequencies are actually clashing, especially in the bass region. I'd say that is the main reason monitors are so valuable for mixing.

the mix usually tells you more about the bass than the speakers, look at how the compressor reacts for instance
