After watching a vhs of a sun-ra documentary at a friends house ive decided to outfit my new apartment with an analogue tv and vcr and most of the game consoles released pre-2000. Its like comfort food for your eyes

Guest analogue wings

Just because it's better than fucking youtube, that doesnt make it good.

See how nostalgic yer hipster feels when he's buried under a pile of giant black platic things that hold less video than the ipod he cant find underneath said pile, are all chewed up and stretched and won't play in his vhs cos he hasn't cleaned the heads 5 times this week.

but to awnser the question : yes it is the new vinyl mostly because were in a wormhole of retro pop art since 2002-2003 ans for another 2 years at the most .....we will then enter the ''nirvana-guns and roses'' nostaligia era. thats when the vhs era will expand in its vintage greatness

i would like to put out a vhs only release. do weird cut up visuals and put music to it.

the visuals would have to look real old school tho. nothing digital. super 8 footage, splicing or super imposing old movies, stop animation maybe. has to seem like it would belong on VHS.

the only way I can watch Return of the Living Dead is the copy i have that is recorded off of the tv on VHS. other wise it just doesn't make much sense.

through the years, a man peoples a space with images of provinces, kingdoms, mountains, bays, ships, islands, fishes, rooms, tools, stars, horses and people. shortly before his death, he discovers that the patient labyrinth of lines traces the image of his own face.

I have very fond memories of watching VHS dubs of the last starfighter and romancing the stone as a kid

Also, what gives with the price of that frankenstein movie, is it a cult classic that you had to grow up in the uk to appreciate?

There’s this fraternity of hardcore horror collectors who are also after the more obscure films from labels that went bust due to banning of video nasties in 84, films that weren’t popular enough to be on the original DPP39 list can still be worth silly money. Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks is apparently the Holy Grail and so rare no one knows anyone who has a copy and the cover alone has fetched 3 figures on ebay!

A mate at work put foolishly put a bid of £500 on when he was drunk but it’s authenticity is now in question so a peak of £1550 has now come down to £750ish and my mate is hoping he won’t have to retract his bid if it gets lower.

If the seller (no response apparently) confirms it’s authenticity then prices will soar again and this will be the most expensive VHS ever.

Either way I’d rather waste my expendable income on vintage synths.

tobacco from black moth super rainbow is doing this with his "fucked up friends" dvd, which is ironic because most of the original footage came from beta tapes!

tapes have surprised me.

has anyone noticed on start-up, after you pop a completely rewound tape in...it starts on just a black screen and you can hear a really faint series of tones?

That's called DTMF signaling. Its information that is put on the master video that tells the automated duplication equipment essential information about what is being recorded. Information ranging from audio levels to the overall time length of the video is encoded into those tones. When the individual recorders receive the tones, it will automatically make the necessary adjustments to ensure the highest quality video possible.

Grew up on the thing, not really a big fan but I love when the soundtracks in early 90's movies go all out of tune on a VHS.

Yeah, that detuned sound is always nice :boc:

VHS is not analogous to vinyl at all... ffs. It's missing 1/3 of what it's supposed to represent due to differences in aspect ratio.

it's nice in that it has texture which is missing in digital formats, and i would be a liar if I didn't say I manipulate vhs tapes in my video exploits.
