does anybody else think it's pathetic that go plastic got such mediocre reviews

in fact greeways trajectory is easily my favorite squarepusher track and probably in my top 5 pieces of music ever recorded as well

 

when that bass fucking drops harder than anything in the history of all things it really makes my heart race X3

Yeah, drukqs got similarly mixed critical reception, but both albums are positively genius

I get round this problem by not reading music publications, after John Peel ive only got my own ears. Sometimes i'll look through the now playing thread and get stuff to listen to in there. But anyone who buys space to give us their opinions or makes their living though criticising is coming from the position of a cunt.

i've found that albums like Go plastic and Drukqs get bad music reviews because they're aren't incredible musically. if it was a review about synth and drum programming obviously both albums and most others like it by our featured artists would get 10/10. i'm not surprised that an album like Hello Everything got better reviews than go plastic. it's musical. theme from sprite and bubble life, they'll get better reviews than my red hot car any day of the week.

Yeah, publications like Rolling Stone are more used to hearing conventional music or pop. They'll love something that harkens back to the days of Led Zeppelin (who ironically enough, Rolling Stone hated back in the 70's). Anything that has a very specific appeal is going to be bashed in a magazine the recommends things for wide appeal.

 

Most magazines or websites have a certain dogma about what music they'll give acclaim to.

Did you seriously expect good ratings for good electronic music by anything that isn't really independent review sites? And why would you need to read a review to listen to music in any case?

it seems to take a while for people to get used to new SP so its not surprising really

 

go plastic still sounds amazing, SP releases are all great in their own way imo but GP goes unique places and is the most cohesive album

Pitchfork's review turned me off of them forever(I was still young and impressionable enough at the time to care what they had to say)... so many choice quotes:

Well, I would say that they are fucking retards and never read music reviews unless it is to mock the writer.

I find a lot of good music is misunderstood at first, then after a few listens the genius will become obvious.

 

Imagine being a reviewer tho and listening to all kinds of generic music in a row and then put on Go Plastic... poor reviewers are probably terrified and annoyed at the same time. As it gets more and more intense they probably just want to get past it as soon as possible.

I've never really been worried about what most reviewers say regarding this music. Most of them are fairly biased and un-informed. Hell, I can barely get my friends to enjoy SP.

 

I dunno, I still really enjoy it!

Sarcasm duly noted, but accusing Tom Jenkinsnon of being lazy for making Go Plastic is pretty ignorant, especially for a self-touting website like Pitchfork. And how can they write such over-the-top reviews without even knowing the most basic things about the music? I go to the site for music news, but every time I read a review, I wish I didn't.
