I've been interested in checking out Janek. Starting album recommendations?

I enjoy the fragility of the rolling lol tbh. The broken lol is like our own mortality staring us in the face, reminding us to enjoy that sunset.

Big fan. Dig all of it. Even the ones I didn't like before made perfect sense eventually.

What strikes me as hilarious is how no less than 5 years ago I was on WATMM complaining about how inaccessible certain Autechre was. My how my tastes have changed...

Yeah, true enough. I think we can both agree though (with relevance to this topic) that Jandek is among several of the things out there (such as Autechre or certain free-jazz and noise music) that are notable for having to grow on you a bit.

Once it clicks though, you can never go back. I can say this with all the seriousness of someone who's paid $70+ for a copy of "Later On" on vinyl...

it's funny, for me, jandek just clicked immediately. but maybe two years ago, when i hadn't worked through the discographies of various more avant garde musicians or even, as you said, inaccessible idm, i would have just turned it off. you definitely cultivate taste in that way.

Yeah, I think it's just different for everyone, which is why I don't jump all over people who think Jandek is talentless and say HEY NO YOU JUST DON'T GET IT because there just isn't anything to get. That's the beauty of what he does I think - it's the most no-frills pure artistic expression ever. To quote King Missile - "Love is what love is, and love is not what love is not"

Guest Gardenia

You've peeked my interest now. He has a huge following here in Houston and he randomly pops up and plays shows it seems. I watched some of his recent live videos on youtube and I was confused because it seemed to be funk music.

I've been listening to Jandek all day. I am mostly into his later dryer sounding atonal material from 2000 on; where it sounds as though he's in the room playing for you as someone put it earlier. I love how many albums he's put out; I just can't stop collecting them and he just keep pumping them out!

Apparently there is a Corwood Industries website now so we can keep up with the new releases... http://www.corwoodindustries.com/

I saw him live in Victoria, Canada almost three years ago now. It was a haunting night to be sure; the crowd that night were nearly as obtuse and unusual as the performer himself. I am still waiting for 'Victoria Wednesday' to be released and I have a feeling it'll be soon!

He's a pretty singular talent for the kinda stuff he does. Very easy to dismiss, but he really creates an atmosphere I haven't heard from anyone else.

I am still waiting on the Richmond show I saw with WATMM's own Luke Hazard in 2007 to come out. I remember it was notable as having been the first live show to feature a saxophone player. Amazing amazing night.

Jandek is probably one of my favourite musicians.

Even for non-fans I think a live show would be worth going to, because you never know what you'll get. It might be one guy wailing on an out of tune guitar, it might be jazz improvisation done entirely on unconventional instruments, it might be a surprisingly conventional 90 minute funk jam.

Holy moly.

Surely someone will upload that, he's what, done two official interviews (like ever?)

I wonder if anyone has approached him in Houston, as people did with J.D. Salinger in Cornish.

Random bloggers have written about meeting the guy in coffee shops or on the street. Some even provide photo evidence

Oh wow, researching those now. Seems like a normal person just very, very dedicated to separating his artistry from his personal life, which I applaud greatly. I was fascinated with him just as he began performing live. I need to dive into his music again.
