Disney buys Marvel Comics for $4 billion

Recommended Posts

I don't know about this, a corporate giant taking control of their movie franchises, just as they had it all sorted out with Marvel Studios.

I know I sure as fuck don't. Most Marvel movies are bad enough. Now with the conglomerate called disney attached.... lord help us...

EDIT: also, i wonder what stan lee thinks of this. I'm sure he'll speak up soon.

wolverines claws will now be daffodils

....and instead of animantium (sp) in his body , it will be a love potion that he spreads through his quests to stop people from being killed, instead of killing them

and there will be an awesome sing along at the end of the movie

Clever move, maybe 10 years too late though considering the main comics have already been made into films

Nah, if anything, right on time - look at the runaway success of franchises like Iron Man, Spiderman (although the latter has trailed off a bit), Hulk, etc. - it's movies like those and Batman (not a Marvel franchise) that have proven superhero movies, games, digital comics, etc. are at a all time high, and as long as things at Marvel in respect to those franchises stay essentially the same or improvements are made for the better (in terms of marketing perhaps), this won't mean much for the end result to the fans. Look at the Disney/Pixar relationship - I don't think Pixar being owned by Disney now (versus a partnership as before) has affected their output, but Toy Story 3 will be a good indicator of that (the story goes Disney really, really wanted another chapter in the franchise, but Pixar didn't want to).

But we have to take into consideration the comics too. I mean, I don't read that kind of stuff anymore but I can imagine a more censored Marvel in page form, and the satirical aspects and social commentary toned down, as to "not upset people".

True - I haven't read comics since the early 90's, so I imagine they're quite racier than they were even back then...

you forget the disney/pixar bustup .. which defined their relationship prior the disney aquisition ...

re: this deal .. i can see an whole lot of bad for the franchise ... ok on the plus side for fans .. because disney will be reaching for a more mature male audience via the IP through this deal we can see that perhaps they won't cease the volume of content moving into production .. but it has to affect future projects on many fronts given disneys perchant for both moralization and standardization ...

i need to research this deal and both companies more to have a better understanding of the consequences .. or i could just finally finish watching iron man .. heh

right, that's what I'm worried about.

I guess, in all honesty, I am not all that too worried about it because A.) I don't read comics (barring Hellblazer (trying to get through those) and a few other good graphic novels. Oh the sandman was awesome too. Oh, and B.) Most marvel super hero movies have been mediocre at best anyway (I know that kind of disses on Raimi a bit, which makes me profoundly sad, but...). I haven't seen Iron man though.

The only good thing I can see coming out of this is it being easier to work out a Pixar adaptation of a Marvel comic.

hah .. 4 billion for ... (*you mention what it should be

One thing I just realized, think of all the Marvel rides at the Universal Studios theme parks, Disney now has properties in competitor's attractions. what a clusterfuck. I can also see this affecting the output of Marvel based videogames as Disney doesn't usually back failing franchises.

new IP is needed .. fuck the big players with DIY ... and it's not as if the corporates haven't got enough other content to adapt ... how much tradition is there in the last 80+ years of US/UK comic production not to mention the manga tradition (which they're already on the way to mangling) .. in other words ... let us be the players an shakers and moneyed takers ...

I hate what Disney has become.  Someone should go talk to Alice Krige's severed bust about this, she can't be allowed to take control of all the movies!

Spider Man flying through the Magical Kingdom.

well if you think about it .. if disney owned all iP .. it would allow all the kinds of mashups that copyright had previously disallowed ... artists would flock to the one ring to pitch their previously forbiddon concepts ... they would become the forbiddon kingdom ...

I don't want my money that would go towards seeing more Marvel films (or Muppets, for that matter) funding shitty children's trends.

guys realize a lot of these IPS are already split between various corporate giants and out of Marvels' hands, Sony owns Spiderman movies and spinoffs, Fox owns X-Men, etc. and a lot of the smaller characters are split up as well. it wasn't until Ari Arad helped set up Marvel Studios that things began to coalesce under one banner; Iron Man, Hulk, Punisher (the rest of the upcoming Avengers spinoffs and Avengers films will be theirs as well). so i see a lot of this relating to the actual books, merchandising (of the books), and media related releases; games, interactive media etc.

Sounds good, but if I see an Xavier's School For Gifted Children Musical on imdb, I'm burning every Disney DVD equipped with FastPlay in an oil drum.

I dunno what you guys are stressing about.

Disney owns everything anyways.

I mean they've owned Miramax since 1993...when did Pulp Fiction come out?
