Guitar Rig updates are very nice. Will certainly be upgrading. True stereo processing is very good. The control room feature will also be good. All around, well done NI.

Kontakt - If I used more kontakt instruments I'd be stoked (i do use a few), but as much as I used to rave about kontakt, I don't use it much anymore. I've found better ways of using samples, and nowadays have the power to just drop stuff into my arrangement. Kontakt is just too bulky if I'm going to be using it for just a few samples. And even with the fact that I own legal versions of all NI stuff, I still have issues with kontakt stability ever since v3. But it's certainly good news for avid kontakt users.

Absynth - I would rather them have updated massive or fm8. Absyth is great for icy sounds, but I don't like the interface and never use it. It's kind of like reaktor where it's hard to get outside of the "NI Sound". That's a ridiculous comment I know, since absynth is so flexible. But I can get anything out of vaz modular, the g2, massive, waldorf/terratec stuff, and others. Absynth never clicked with me, aside from having a cool name and nice color scheme. If I ever do a movie score I'm sure I'll fire it up.

Also, it's getting annoying when NI "Updates" their stuff, when its really them adding more presets, and kore stuff with a few other features.

Cool. I'm broke.

At Brandi_B: I only use Kontakt when I'm making instruments from samples. Like some kind of bass instrument or lead. And I still use version 2

And the harp is pretty nice. When I get a commission that is supposed to use natural instruments, I fire up Kontakt.

maus showed me how to use Kontakt like i've been using my reaktor samplers. You can drop a sample in and basically pitch shift it without changing the length, so take any remotely tonal sound and turn it into a pad. there is also a cool feature called 'tone machine' where you can turn even a cymbal hit into a pad sound.

as far as drum/percussion sampling goes i use battery when dealing with a lot of short samples

Yeah, kontakt is still very awesome, and pretty unbeatable. I used to use it inside and out. It was my main "synth" and "drum sampler" from like 2006-2008 but recently I have fallen in love with battery for drums. I also use addictive drums, but usually mangle the crap out of a drum loop i make, and load it into battery or just into the arrange window. Actually that's relly the reason I don't use kontakt anymore, is I just prefer to drop as much stuff into the arrange window as possible, as I like to see it and automate it, instead of just kontakt trigger cells.

However I f i had more money to buy kontakt instruments, like the wivi, red bass, kick ass brass, etc I would be using it all the time again but I can't afford that stuff. My friend has all those and more and I thnk that's one of the strengths of kontakt are those instruments made for it. :emotawesomepm9:

Hell yes, I'm looking forward to this new guitar rig. Admittedly I am kind of interested to check out the new stuff in absynth.

I've heard a few people disappointed with the lack of a new Reaktor... but heres my question...

What the heck is reaktor missing?

yeah, I'm not a huge reaktor fan, but it really isn't missing anything tbh. Especially these days being able to use max/msp in abelton if that's your fancy. If NI could add some non NI sounding modules in there, like massive stuff, that would be cool I guess. I kind of wish i could sell reaktor but the license doesn't work that way. I much prefer vaz modular, nord g2, tassman, and synth edit. If I felt like learning max/msp I'm sure i'd love that too, but it (like reaktor) seems to take a lot of fun and flow out of the creative process (for me).

reaktor isnt missing anything, i just dont like Reaktor 5 because they changed fundamental aspects of how the program works (how you accomplish virtual connections with no wires) VS Reaktor 4. they were totally unnecessary changes that have made all my old Reaktor 4 patches only partially functional in 5. just a huge pain in the ass really.

its not missing anything really, but I'm sure if NI decided to update it, it would be something cool. I don't actually care though, its not like I'm going to buy it. I already have reaktor 5 and I'm happy I have nothing to gloat over.

that's what put the nail in the coffin for me. Most my 4 patches sounded all messed up in 5, and i tried to go back and install 4 again but having that and 5 installed just pissed cubase off :( SO i said eff u i never liked u much n-e way reaktor.

I think that NI could go a long way to improve the quality of the interpolation in the delay and sampler modules... And Reaktor's MIDI output performance has always been a bit lackluster in my opinion... And it would be spiffy beyond all belief in they made it possible to convert ensembles or instruments to standalone plugins... because it's a real chore having to choose a name and a file location for an instance of Reaktor if I'm just going to be using one effect on a track..

There's a guy on, I think, the electro music forums that is attempting to make a fully functioning virtual nord modular g2 in reaktor. Of course it won't sound like it, but will function like it. Very interesting. *goes to check on progress*

Damn this guy is going all out! He says it won't be finished till 2012 and he's working on it often.

Guest Wall Bird

Reaktor needs to be better ergonomically. It is really uncomfortable to patch modules together and hard to work quickly. Also, I would like more involved documentation at my fingertips such as what Max/MSP has, because I constantly have to be looking up the module functions. On the plus side, the audio generation algorithms in Reaktor sound incredibly good. It also has a large library of unique prebuilt synthesizers that warrant buying the program just for the option of using them.

I think it is pretty well designed for how huge it is. A lot of the modules have a info window. I don't find it all that difficult to figure out what is going on in a patch. Say I need something quickly, like a multiband delay where the high band is being fed through a waveshaper before the feedback loop. Its pretty easy to put together. Just slap a couple filter modules here, some delay, bam! That the thing I like about it, is the nested levels. You can work extremely low level and build yourself a bandpass filter out of logic components(as of version 5 especially, with core), or you can just patch/layer a couple instruments together and put them through a reverb unit.

I'm going to do everything I can to make this new version of kontakt crash. If it doesn't, i will be one happy person and can get back to using it often.

*waits for massive modular*

they also discontinued a bunch of old instruments like pro53, b4, all that shit. They say kontakt replaces everything except pro53, which reaktor and massive cover sonically.
