i've only heard fear of a blank planet, and while the music was interesting, the pop culture references in the lyrics kinda put me off ("they sound like pearl jam", "mtv", "song comes onto my ipod" etc). maybe i'll give this one a try.

Can't say I'm a huge fan. But I like Wilson when he does electronica under his other alias Bass Communion.

In response to above; FOABP was a bit rubbish lyrically. I don't like it too much musically. But it was a concept album based on a book.

guess so. i still don't like product placement in lyrics though hehe.

i recently bought the cd+dvd version of lightbulb sun but have never listened to it. maybe i should give it a try sometime, heh.

You should. It's quite a bit different from the other stuff. It's a bit of a transition between the two "main" eras of PT

The Incident is a bloody awful record. Absolutely horrible prog-pastiche without a hint of originality. Cringeworthy lyrics. Too much Pink Floyd referencing.

Real shame because SW is capable of so much greatness. In Absentia and Insurgentes were bloody brilliant.

I don't think it was that bad. Probly my least favourite though (haven't heard OTSOL, UTD or TSMS).

TI has split a lot of fans...I feel it's a transition album-i.e. It's a part of the transition between the current prog metal influenced PT sound and whatever era we will get next (betting on something electronic, like the incident (song) or maybe a bit jazzy). I don't think it'll be a big change, as the heavy stuff has won them a good few fans.

Now this is a thread for me.

I most certainly don't consider The Incident a bad record, but I don't consider it a huge masterpiece either. It's a very pretentious concept and I find it to be well done. The direction the band takes is all in the hands of Wilson and most often it's driven by the music and artists which influence Wilson at the given time, which is why the band ever since In Absentia have gotten more and more metal-esque moments and elements and most recent The Incident which has some straight-on Meshuggah-metal moments such as Circle of Manias. As much as I adore the album on record it's way, way better live. It just works better in a live environment.

I liked Fear of a Blank Planet more as a whole, a pretty perfect record. Anesthetize is still an absolute monster. The quiet build-up, the heavy part and the aftermath sort of thing. Holy shit, it's good. The lyrics on there are very, very bleak and to some degree bland, but it's all to support the bleak atmosphere of the music and concept.

Probably. Either the new will 'complete' this transformation and go in another direction or some time will pass and the band will already be on another path. Speaking about jazz, Steven are, as far as I know, in the process of writing and recording his next solo record, and I believe he mentioned that he'll be working pretty tight with (Robert) Fripp and that it'll take a pretty different approach than Insurgentes did. Jazzy, bluesy, more 70's experimental ala King Crimson. I personally can't wait.

Yeah, apparantly there is a centre piece similar to the length of Anesthetize (dont quote me on that, though). There are meant to be a whole heap of guests as well, so I'm pretty exctied.

Oh, and he's recording it without a click track!

And the project with the guy from Opeth (and possible Dream Theater) is supposedly finally in progress.

Recordings is gettig reissued. In Absentia just got the vinyl treatment. Insurgentes (DVD) is coming out. And, Amongst other things, blackfield III is under way (not too chuffed about that).

Yeah. I even heard some sort of demo has been leaked, though I haven't heard it myself nor do I think I want to. It was mentioned a few times over at the Porcupine Tree forums.

Yeah, Mikael Åkerfeldt and Mike Portnoy. I don't if it was all three, but I know it was Wilson and Åkerfeldt at least, who recorded a well-done demo titled 'Cut Ribbon' a few years back (might have been back in the In Absentia sessions) considering that the line "Collapse the light into the earth" (which is the title of the last track on In Absentia) is sung in the chorus. I think it was released on Wilson's myspace years and years ago but some lads snatched the audio track before it was taken down again. Really nice track. Wilson (or Åkerfeld?) did say that the style of the record will be very much inspired by a certain 70's artist, I can't for the life of me remember who though.

Indeed it is. the Blackfield records are good records, they're nicely performed and clings nicely, but I'd much rather see Wilson focus on new Bass Communion material etc. I'm still crazy about the Litany 12" which was put out last year. Hopefully those vocal experiments will turn into a full album. I would imagine that it'll be a more ethereal, bright and upliftning version of Ghosts On Magnetic Tape.
