It was all analogue but... if you can get your hands on Steinberg's Virtual Guitar Simulator or whatever it's called then there's a bunch of cool delay, reverb, phaser, flanger, amplitube etc. pedals included. It's the best non-analogue plugin I've tried for dub-making :)

this thing is awesome for metal-ish sounds:

http://www.macmusic.org/software/version.php/lang/en/id/8969/

it actually has metallica etc presets that are pretty close

i reckon it's tweakable to the purpose - when i think about it, it has an FX only mode too. hmmm

I should really start making music on my mac... fuck.

Also, Kaoss Pad 1 has one of the best delays ever. It's very reggae-ish.

I've seen this asked so many times and no one seems to know beyond the usual lots of analogue, Roland space echo, record to tape. However...

i get the feeling they used a lot of chained delays synced to various subdivisions of the tempo with various filters on a bunch of busses, and just rode the faders by ear, like a dub producer would. maybe they had synced delays feeding other synced delays too. to get it sounding as warm as they do though... :cisfor:

yeah, space echo.

In that first picture there's a lot of stompboxes next to the mixer, no idea what they are, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was all delay and overdrive.

having say a drum machine pattern be the input controller for a synth just holding a chord or cycling between two of them or whatever. so you can program the drum machine on the fly to control the rhythms of the "dub chords"

i get the feeling there was some tracks dedicated entirely to sidechain compression of the synths to get that pulse - maybe a bus purely dedicated to sidechain compression (with even more delay and dub fader-riding, lol). i get the feeling it was pretty much entirely live

I watched the Baader Meinhoff Complex last night, and I have a theory that german techno and dub-techno contributed to the end of RAF and communist teutonic terrorism in the same way ecstasy and house contibuted to the end, more or less, of football hooliganism in the UK. Might not be entirely coherent.

fuck

Upper half is two rows of Doepfer modules (obviously). Lower half is a Cwejman S1 MKII. The thing on the bottom is an SND Sam-16 sequencer.
