I work with a lot of black youth and I must say that I get annoyed because that "um" you're hearing from them is not being used for its original intention. People say "um" whenever they can't think what to say next or need to stall to collect or filter their thoughts, etc. In the case of the urban usage, they know exactly what they're going to say or what they want to convey but they drag out this huge, "UULLLLLM" usually followed by some cocky statement they knew they were going to say all along.
