Well, what do you guys think about this man? The only albums I don't listen to fairly frequently are Sea Change and Stereopathetic Soulmanure

That's funny, Sea Change is his only album I frequently listen to.

Besides that I really like Mellow Gold, just can't get into Odelay that much, it's okay but doesn't really do too much for me.

Just recently listened to Guerro again for the first time since ages because it carries a lot of bad memories for me, it's a good album though.

Guero is also the latest of his I'm familiar with, for me he's one of those artists that I know it out there but don't really follow but it's good to know that he has some more material to check out.

well undoubtedly his best is midnite vultures. guero is a close second, there is maybe one weak track on that album honestly. Never got the hype arounf Odelay, but I always figured it was a more "be there when it was released type of thing"

I was very disappointed by the Information and subsequently modern guilt. I worry that he's slowly run himself dry, which is sad but ultimately inevitable, especially for a guy who honestly tries on new outfits and styles as much as he can.

Mutations is also severely underrated, there are some really excellent productions and lyrics on that cd. it's essentially a b sides collection, not a real concept, but what an excellent B sides it is!

Beck is good. closest thing the 90s and beyond have had to the beatles imo.

I mostly listen to the tracks Loser, Devil's Haircut and Where It's At, haven't payed much attention to much else. I should, you know.

But he's definitely my favourite scientologist, that's for sure.

Stereopathetic Soulmanure is great.

Midnite Vultures is really slick, not my fave, but still well done. Saw the live show for that...amazing.

I still like the honest rawness of Mellow Gold a lot.

Guero, Mutations, Sea Changes, Modern Guilt are all good but not great...better than good though.

Mellow gold and mutations changed my life. Mellow gold being a huge influence to me.

Odelay was good but can't touch the previous two

Midnight Vultures however is sexy and nice....but still...nothing on m. gold and mutations

Yeah odelay doesn't really have a very good "flow" to it, it's an easy record to hit the skip button on.

I seriously do not understand the hate or disinterest for the Information. Maybe it's a little tired or something and not as original (though I think it has some of his more interesting work) , regardless there are some songs on that album that are just classic. Dark Star, Cellphone's Dead, Elevator Music... all good shit with great beats and psychedelic effects and lyrics. The album as a whole seems to me to be his most trippy.

big fan. can't stand guero tho.

I was really put off by Guero when it came out, but gave it another chance after he released two more albums that were fucking awesome --I figured I must have missed something with Guero. I don't completely dislike it like I used to, but it definitely remains his low point for me. There just doesn't seem to be anything much of real substance on that one, just a lot of goofy half-assed filler... which has its place, just gets tiresome when it's a whole album's worth. Of course I'm probably exaggerating, but my memory's really not being kind on this one.

I can't pick a favorite between Midnight Vultures, Sea Change and Mutations. Those are three of my favorite albums by anyone. The Information is also up there, an underrated album for sure. There are plenty great songs on there, but even if there weren't the production would more than make up for it. Hell, even Modern Guilt deserves a lot of love. Volcano and Chem Trails are two of his best tunes, and the title track's a classic. Love the lyrics on this album.

The Scientology thing is surprising, but to be fair he was born into it. I've met lots of bright people who still believe one thing or another because that was how they were raised. The only real difference between Scientology and any other religion to me is the fact that the guy who founded it said himself that the easiest way to make a lot of money is to start your own religion. But I don't find the ideas any more or less hard to swallow than those of any other doctrine.

I really love guero. The boc remix of Broken Drum is quite fantastic:

Scarecrow and Rental Car are two other great songs from that album:

it's the production for me. if the songs were done by a godrich or someone else i imagine it woulda been completely different. some songs are alright but its the repetetive sample based production that lets it down (worked with odelay but not this time round). i don't mind girl and earthquake weather tho.

as for information, totally dig it. how good is

live performance of motorcade?

modern guilt i also love. the acoustic version currently being uploaded to beck's website is worth checking out :)

Nothin' but love. Hope the man continues on into his 60's making acoustic records, once he has to hang up the disco boots so to speak.

*shrug*

Yeah, it's probably an irrational dislike. I react strongly to music, so a slight disappointment to me from an artist I'm really into gets magnified into something way worse than it actually is I'm sure. If someone else released Guero I'd probably think "these guys are not bad, sounds like they're having a good time" and move on. I guess that was the first album of his where it sounded to me like he was out of fresh ideas and was almost making a caricature of his past work. That sort of thing always strike a nerve for me when it comes from an artist I respect. And it's to his credit that I can't say that about any of his other albums. Beck's been one of the most consistently on-his-game mainstream artists of the last decade.
