Pissed off with free synths

Seems all they ever do is crash. I'm just going to fucking pirate about 2 synths, 2 effects and a few others cus clearly no one can write a fucking program without it crashing. Maybe it's my version of live, I don't know. It really puts me off making music.

what are you using specifically? if you're having reliability issues maybe upgrade to non-free versions

Well this will always happen as the software is made by less experienced programmers or it will never be intended for commercial use. They may just be in beta stages and development. Free stuff always has certain draw backs. That being said, there is stuff out there that works really well and very stable. Some of the processors I use are free and I cant find anything else that works as well as they do.

Ableton live crashes when a VST does which is not helpful when you have unsaved work, crashed the whole program and for some reason live sticks in the memory/process so you literally have to restart your whole computer to then fire it up again. Brilliant.

Synths like Rez and stuff like that. The sequencer shouldn't crash if the synth/effect does, that's retarded. I'm using ableton 7.04 cracked pirated cus I'm not making piss all from my music (and probably won't ever be at this rate) so I don't see why I should pay for it.

I'm considering downloading the hefty 1gb v8 of it but I just hate downloading huge files, takes ages and by then my little inspiration I did have is gone. Maybe I should go to version 6, seems most software just gets shitter the newer it is these days.

I was contemplating Reason as it's all in one but I HATE the idea of using all the synths everyone else does, I may as well just copy everyone.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I went and tried some hardware synths and sequencers.

Is this why everyone uses mac? do macs crash as much, anyone? Something about having all the trusted components and not having a bunch of pick and mix hardware components seems like a better idea but I can't be sure.

If macs didn't crash I'd buy one instantly but it probably all boils down to re-installing windows. I might buy separate hard drive, never go on the internet, only use the most trusted sequencer & only the most trusted VST's and go from there.

well, having the same problem recently. for me, it's not the vst's fault, it's cracked ableton's fault.

it crashes all the time, all the time. it seems to be a common issue with cracked ableton... works fine and then few months later, it starts crashing (I'm on a mac btw). they seem to be good at anti-crack programming.

anyways, this is making me buying ableton live. which I will do probably within the next 2 weeks. I just use Live so much that I can justify the 500$ thingy. IMO, you cannot really complain about crashing softwares when you are cracking them.

just my 2 cents but Reason's 3 main synths are so fucking versitile it's retarded. Especially the maelstrom & the Thor. Especially the Thor. That son of a bitch is wicked.

Also, Reason has never once crashed on me. You can wire it into Live too if you wish.

Yea, this is probably it. I've never had any major issues with freeware vsts other than too much cpu use. I once had an issue with using the bidule vst, but was able to resolve the issue by selecting the "static processing buffer" option in renoise. Try using your free plug ins in another daw and see if you're still having issues or by a legit copy of ableton.

none of the vst synths I use ever crash on me. What synths specifically are you having problems with? I will try to recommend alternatives that I know to be stable.

This is why I went legit with software. Since then I've written 3 albums without any problems (on a mac none the less).

I used to have the problem with Ableton crashing all the time, though eventually I realized which VSTs caused the problems so I've just stopped using those.

In terms of Ableton crashing even when you don't use VSTs, there could be a number of issues, such as how dirty your computer is, the hotter your processor gets, the higher likelyhood of programs crashing or having the entire operating system crash on you.

Also, I think it's important to have your music computer only be for music. On my music computer, I disabled every service/program that didn't have to do with audio, so when I start it up there are only 12 processes running, and only 90MB of RAM used (I'm on Windows XP btw). The fact that I can't even run the wireless network/internet is also good for keeping on task when working too, plus no worry about viruses.

Regardless I haven't had Ableton crash on me in well over a year, I still try new VSTs every now and then but I'm pretty settled on the synths I use, so yeah, you just have to find your happy medium...

And yes Reason is pretty good but I find it's very processor intensive even if you have a very fast computer.

Either way good luck with getting rid of the crashes!!

i have only ever had pretty shit computers and i've never had this problem. seriously. something must be wrong because I can have a billion machines running and the cpu meter RARELY makes it past the halfway point. check your buffer i guess.

sounds like you've got a shit computer

i use free vst's

dont have any problems

i wouldn't even put your problems down to using cracks (if you do)

sounds like a shit computer
