Sciecnce-y Type of Question

Recommended Posts

So I was wondering if anyone here knew the science behind alcohol or drug related blackouts, and if there is any type of factual evidence behind the reason a person behaves a certain way whilst blacked out. You hear some people say that that is how a person behaves sans-neurosis, so you are less inhibited, and behave like your true self. I don't really buy that, because my true self isn't quite that stupid. Any kind of anecdotal evidence is appreciated. :cisfor::crazy::fail:

It isn't about the true self, it's about the programmed ego being disconnected from the subconscious mind(the filter we all have built in), blathering about with no filter due to being too intoxicated....

so yes, we are that stupid....

my best friend is one of the most intelligent people I will ever know but when he gets too drunk, he turns into a wolf that throws chairs against walls, tells it like it is, no matter how disturbing or stupid it sounds coming out of his mouth...

don't feel embarrassed, this happens to most of us....

Science whatever!

oh It is mostly insane drivel that we call "wolfing out", and not throwing chairs, it has happened a couple of times but mostly him laughing at everyone and calling them names, not nice names, but dirty honest ones...

and it is never directed at me, strange, I guess he really does respect me...

ahhh friends :sorcerer:

What Atop said basically.

We become so intoxicated we actually don't knwowwe are doing. One of my best friends commited rape and put a persons head through a window in a blackout. This guy wouldn't kill an ant in his kitchen the morning before because he believes it to be against Gods will. Many people mistake blacking out with passing out, not the same thing, a blackout happens in full consciousness and is something we have no control over how we behave and it's something we cannot remember. It's fucking dangerous.

I hope you aren't telling me this.

At any rate, I don't know what got me thinking about this. My craziest blackout story is not watmm safe really. Embarrassing indeed. Possibly incriminating..

Try this: our brains evolved from the ground up meaning that our brain stem and other deep structures are related to most other animals in the world. The further you go out into the cortex and frontal lobe, the more "human" you get i.e. morality, planning, intelligence, etc.

The booze hits your gut and goes straight to your blood where it then deconstructs your humanity from the outside in. So, you start with frontal lobe because it's quite sensitive to change in health conditions (that's why you can hallucinate during a fever). This gives you the "silver tongue" to chat up ladies or do mild risk taking. Ethanol moves onto the remainder of the outer cerebral cortex ("cortex" means "bark" like on a tree). Now, you're pissed up and are much looser. Stupid shit could fire at will but your conscious. Up next is your cerebellum, which is your proprioception and coordination. This is you stumbling onto your ass, twisting your knee, or busting your teeth out on a shot glass.

The final frontier is the limbic system and it is resistant to ethanol intoxication. So, the end result is that you have the same impulses as a capuchin monkey or even a fucking crocodile yet your human "shell" of the cortex is not keeping it in check. All forms of heinous things can go on at this point because ethanol is a tissue solvent--it literally kills cells as it moves through. Fortunately, you have trillions but if you hit it that hard, you'll be overwhelmed. And some people say, "oh, I would never anything blacked out that I wouldn't do consciously" and the resounding answer is "bullshit." When you drink that hard, you're doing a brain swap with Lenny the low-functioning killer at the local asylum for a night. Don't start whinging when you wake up to blood that ain't yours. The law (American) sees it that way too, just to clarify.

interesting. How about with extreme benzo intoxication? I'm sure it's similar to the ethanol but does it hit different receptors and in different order?

When I black out, I tell my best jokes. I set up a punchline three sentences ahead in a conversation once, and I have no idea how the hell I did it. I've also carried on a cogent conversation with my brother about how much fun it is to watch Michael Keaton play a zany character for twenty minutes while we were watching Much Ado About Nothing. I watched it again the next night, sober, and shouted, "Michael Keaton's in this movie?! AWESOME!!" And my brother stared at me like I had just handed him the severed head of an acquaintance.

if you let it? lol... if it wants to it's going to, whether you let it or not...

Yeah--what I meant though was that there is a fundamental difference between taking 2 mg. before bed to get right and taking 44 mg. across a couple of hours by dropping them 5 at a time into a mug of Shiraz and letting them dissolve. I wish I could say that my example was hypothetical but it wasn't :wtf:

I knew what you meant by if you let it. It's like are you taking these pills to fall asleep/avoid seizures/cure mental illness or are you taking them to get fucked up for the night.

lol perhaps you're right, but goddamn modey it makes me look even worse than most of you all already think of me.

ok, the incriminating part isn't what worries me, it's my behavior, and how absolutely retarded it was. so even if I say SWIM, we all know it's MY dumb ass.... I will take a bribe though.
