I - Between Two Worlds

after thoroughly checking out Immortal's new effort, "All Shall Fall", i put on Abbath's recent side project's "I" album "Between Two Worlds" after some months. and i'm at a loss of words. again.

you've probably seen me rambling about this album here on watmm for a few times in the past already, but here i go again - i just want to make you guys feel what i feel when i listen to this.

for a start, i have to warn you that this album contains copious amounts of cheese. maybe not for people that are more used to black metal, but the fact is, songs here are about warriors, battles, icy mountains, cold winter breeze, ... and if you think you can handle that, awesome! me, not only i can handle that but i fuckin love it! and it's not even a real metal album, it's more like heavy rock/metal with vocals by Abbath of Immortal.

other members of this project include Armagedda, another (ex) member of Immortal, his drumming is really perfect for this kind of music. then there's Ice Dale (Enslaved), he provides some of the best guitar solos i've heard in this kind of music. is so catchy, epic, melodic... perfect! and then there's T.C. King (Gorgoroth, Sahg) dropping some awesome groovy basslines. on top of that Demonaz (Immortal) wrote all the lyrics!

listening to this makes me feel both like a teenager and a viking norse warrior at once. this has to be one of top 5 most important albums in my life. so much great riffs, epic atmosphere and kickass songs in general, i've not heard that anywhere else.

now please, check this out and tell me if it moves you!

Well, it's better then the new immortal album (although I have listened it only 6/7 times, but it had too much expectations of them telling they would go back to the old immortal sound, I'm just getting over the dissapointment and starting to appreciate it as it is, but I really dislike the production and some boring riffs).

This album however is totally bathory/immortal/motorhead and you can hear the musicians enjoying themselves, playing what they like, instead of them focussing on "making a typical immortal album". To make my point short, they should've made a new I album instead of an Immortal one, that name is too hyped up and the music is too forced.

yeah, the new immortal is just too uninspired. sons of northern darkness and between two worlds set the bar too high for me. unearthly kingdom is a great track, but the rest is mostly just meh.

now, Willemjan, tell us about your favorite parts of Between Two Worlds! mine has to be the first guitar solo in "Warriors"... and the finishing solo as well!

or maybe in "Mountains", when Abbath screams "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" and then the verse "Mountains of ice calm in my sight, Platforms built by wind, Mountains of ice calm in my sight, Platforms built for kings"... and then the guitar solo!

but most of all, "Far Beyond The Quiet". that track gives me the chills every time i hear it, from the first second to the end. i mean... when i hear "A man stands on the hillside, Watching the blackened sky, Memorizing times from another age, Now make his soul and spirit glance like fire"... damn i gotta put that on right now!!!

It has the epic style from at the heart of winter/SOND. Some mighty riffs in warriors (the "It's a great day for fire" part), totally (late) bathory screams of abbath (especially the title track and far beyond the quiet), the openingriff in cursed we are and the main riff in the storm i ride, just one big riff-o-rama althrough. For comparison, very little memorable riffs on all shall fall.

Did you also heard abbath's motorhead tributeband ( http://www.myspace.com/bombersofbergen )? A good perspective in his influences for sure.

yeah, i know about bombers :)

the riffage of between two worlds is "awesome". i really can't think of a better word. and it's scary how so many tracks of an album can have so catchy and memorable riffs. mad respect to both abbath and ice dale for the guitar work, both riff and solo-wise.

i know what you mean with bathory comparison, usually when the album's over i put on some hammerheart! and "far beyond the quiet" is dedicated to quorthon. great stuff, bathory!
