Eigenharp Alpha

just saw a video of this on BBC News Website

decided to have a look at the product page to see what it can do.

it's essentially just a softsynth package with an extortionately expensive midi controller. at first i thought that it could run standalone, similar to the Nord Modular G2 where you create the patches on the computer and upload to the synth, but this seems to require the computer to do sound generation.

yeah I saw this on the BBC website today and concluded that it's nothing more than a fancy midi controller. what a load of shit. won't sell many I expect.

the only reason this thing is getting so much press is because its over $6,000 , if it was a $500 device i dont think we would be talking about it

the reason i posted it was because its developers, and everywhere else, seem to be touting it as an instrument.

and i personally class a device as an instrument when it can do tone generation "on-board". rather than requiring a softsynth on a computer.

that's not the definition of an instrument, to me

probably whats going to happen now is that people like bjork or radiohead or whoever will use this as their latest gimmick of the week in order to remain "artistic" "creative" and "cutting-edge"

Guest Wall Bird

It looks as if it has an amazing amount of potential for expression. I'm sure it will take time for it to become a mature instrument - if it can maintain production - and someone will hopefully use it in a supple and nuanced manner that doesn't include using it to play crappy Moby covers. Someone needs to develop a single patch for it and focus only on that instrument. Pat Metheny has the same philosophy when it comes to playing his synthesizer-equipped guitar. He has two patches that he is dedicated to mastering just as much as any other acoustic instrument.

I'd be really curious to see someone implement some of the latest physical modeling techniques. To make a super-unnatural modeled instrument with acoustic properties that are in flux would be something. Also, it's just begging to be conjoined with Tim Exile's 'The Finger'.
