First of all, WATMM is lacking a Black Dog Productions (Now "The Black Dog") subforum and definitely deserves one. But i am making the suggestion and hope someone thinks about that.

Now, the subject, which is simply a set i want to share with those who still haven't heard, recorded in Stockholm, year 1995 by these guys while they still were "Black Dog Productions". All the tracks except the first one are unreleased (if i am not wrong) and the sound is similar to Bytes / Spanners era.

Enjoy it!

Download (9 Tracks at 160kbps. The best i can get. Filesize: 67.26 MB.)

They only changed their name 'The Black Dog' to Black Dog Productions because they were already signed to GPR, but then wanted to sign to Warp for lots of money, and so had to change their name.... for contractual reasons. and that's why on Bytes there are tracks under various different psuedonym's. ie. Balil, Close, Up, Over, Atypic, Discordian Popes, Xeper, etc. etc. But they were always 'The Black Dog' really.

Also, almost all the tracks played at that Stokholm gig have actually been released before. On albums such as 'Repeat', where Ed and Andy wrote 3 tracks with Mark Broom, and on the 'Mind Over Rhythm' album, and The Black Dog Peel sessions recorded in early '95. - Check them out.

That gig is actually the last live gig that Downie, Handley and Turner ever played together before The Black Dog split up. So it's quite a classic piece of electronic music history!

I don't think this place really needs a Black Dog sub forum, does it? Ed and Andy are Plaid now, and people can talk about their Black Dog material in this sub forum. The music that the current Black Dog line up are releasing is completely different to all that brilliant original stuff! - the recent BD stuff is really boring imo.

I wasn't clear when i wrote that. The first track seems similar to one of the Peel Sessions and there's one track edited from "Barbola Work". I have the Repeat and 'Mind Over Rhythm' stuff, but didn't noticed that. It really feels like The Black Dog in the set.

It's not boring, but actually very good. It's just different because it's more dancefloor oriented, but still IDM, and that's what we have from them now. I love plaid too, but i prefer the Trainer and Bytes style tracks.

The latest Black Dog stuff is not 'IDM'. it's just Techno, and mostly dancefloor orientated. i find it dull and quite lacking in character, that the 90's Black Dog had.

and it's not Ed and Andy, you realise that yeah?

Ed and Andy have nothing to do with The Black Dog anymore. they left in '95 (just incase you weren't aware)

The Black Dog now consists of Ken Downie and 2 other people. (who are most definitely not Ed & Andy)

You seem to be stuck to the old Black Dog stuff to understand these guys new approach and i seriously doubt that you really heard the most recent music (Radio Scarecrow and Further Vexations) they have done. Stop with the nostalghia. Sure it is techno, with emphasys on beat and heavy bass, being mostly club oriented - and this is the main difference from the original ken + plaid ideas - but it still has that IDM side (Ken it's still there, remember?) and the ambient pieces and segments, often a bit dark that make the transitions and give coherence to the albuns. You shouldn't be that conservative: The Black Dog split and now we have Plaid on one side and Ken Downie on the other side, both doing great music on different ways. We can't just be stuck to the past and get blind to new ideas.

Sorry but i have to say, i'm not the one who posted an old live gig from '95 and said how much i love and prefer the type of music from The Black Dog's Bytes and Spanners era, which was 92-95. lol

I don't think you really know what you're talking about. maybe stuff has been lost in translation somehow..

but i'm not blind to new ideas at all.. I just don't enjoy the new BD stuff much.

But thanks for posting the live set anyway.

You should have stopped talking after you wrote "Have a nice day". You are just contradicting yourself after each sentence.

Bytes / Spanners era is, in fact, my favorite type of sound, but i enjoy every single track these guys have produced. From Black Dog Productions, to Plaid, to Repeat, to the most recent reincarnation of The Black Dog, everything.

Now i will tell you why i have posted this gig, from 95', and i did that for one reason only: to share it with the fans, because it's so rare and hard to find on the internet (from torrents to soulseek) and everywhere else. I am sure that almost everyone has it here on WATMM, but i share it with good intention, that's all.

And mate, you are blind to new ideas, don't fool yourself. Otherwise you wouldn't be refering to the new TbD stuff as "boring" and "lacking character".

My time to say, have a nice day :)

I hadn't actually read your whole post properly before. i just skimmed over it as i was cooking some food at the time. that's when i said "have a nice day"... when i left to attend my cooking. ok? lol

..but then later, after reading your post again, and properly, i decided to say something more. that is really not "contradicting" myself at all.

Anyway, like i said before, I don't think you really know what you're talking about. just because i don't like any of the new BD material and think it's boring, does not mean to say i am "blind to new ideas" ! lol. that's a ridiculous, unfair thing to say. You can like it as much as you want to. fair enough. but i think it's mostly rubbish.

I do like 'Silenced', though. i'm just not into the whole Northern dancefloor-oriented version of The Black Dog at the moment. but i guess that's what Downie has had to do to survive. so, fair play. may they live long and prosper.

Have a nice evening.

Bull Crap. If you don't enjoy any of the tracks off Parallel or Bytes, in some way, remembering that they were made like, 20 odd years ago, then... you're stupid! lol

it's brilliant music for the time, imho.

there's no tension over here mate!

check out Unsavoury Products, Music for Adverts & Short Films, and Silenced. - they're good albums, tho MFA&SF's is the better of the 3, imho.

i too prefer Plaid, but love a lot of the early Black Dog material aswell. it's totally unlike anything else.

Just as sirch said. Early Black Dog stuff is unique in its sound. Check out "Temple of Transparent Balls" and "Paralell" also.

Dude! you've included a photo of the current Black Dog with this file. that's massively innapropriate seeing as the other 2 didn't join Downie till a few years ago!

The people who should be credited for this live gig, visually or other wise, are: Ken Downie, Ed Handley and Andy Turner. The Black Dog, '89 - '95.

That's right. I didn't even notice and think there is not one single picture of the original three members.

Nevermind, my bad.
