thief
"At age 17, Richard D. James mentioned these influences: "Phonic Boy, Computer World, Mental Telepathy, Industrial Inc., Tomita, Tangerine Dream". 2 questions: 1. where's the citation? 2. why was afx being interviewed at age 17? Typing in Phonic Boy on wiki links you back to Aphex's article. Computer World is a Kraftwerk album and he has said Kraftwerk as an inspiration, Mental Telepathy with no musical results nor Industrial Inc. Tomita is a japanese name which literally means "Wealthy rice fields" and Tangerine Dream are a german electronic music group founded in 1967... yeah this all sounds like Rich himself having a laugh Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/50345-the-aphex-wiki-entry/#findComment-1157399 Share on other sites
Herr Jan
They could better use this (more serious) list (from 1997): "Richard D. James (Aphex Twin) * Drexciya The Quest * Erik Satie 'Trois Gymnopédies' * Return of the DJ's * Squarepusher Big Loada * Luke Vibert Big Soup * Batucada The Sound Of The Favelas * Best of Acid 1 * Ween Pod and Pure Guava * Les Baxter The Exotic Moods of Les Baxter * Serge Gainsbourg * Tod Dockstader 'Luna Park' Drexciya are from Detriot, part of Underground Resistance- I really like them. Return of the DJ's is music from California- it's avant-garde hip-hop, taking it to another extreme with a lot of excessive scrathing and cutting up. Batucada are from South America with really, really fast rhythms with screaming and shouting with no songs. Best of Acid 1 is old school from '88 with all of these Chicago producers and acid tunes. I love Ween- I really, really like them and everything they do. I'm well into Les Baxter- a right weirdo. I have this double CD by Gainsbough that I like a lot with 'Lemon Incest' on it. I've got CD's by Nurse With Wounds and Harry Partch with me but I haven't listened to them yet." from: http://www.furious.com/Perfect/staff2.html#aphex Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/50345-the-aphex-wiki-entry/#findComment-1157410 Share on other sites

This is legit and is in the liner notes for Artificial Intelligence. He was 17 at the time that Polygon Window (as Dice Man) was put on the compilation. At least the liner notes for the track say he's 17, for what it's worth. Guest Diao
A local DJ went by Phonic Boy around Cornwall, and Aphex went by Phonic Boy On Dope, IIRC. Key
Phonic Boy - himself Computer World - Kraftwerk Mental Telepathy - oohh all mysterious synesthesic mind wanderer rich Industrial Inc. - ?? prolly some obscure contemporary industrial musician(s)or just a reference to industrial music itself. Tomita - Isao Tomita, japanese electronic musician Tangerine Dream - german electronic musicians. its taken from the inlay of AI 1 released in 1992, when Rich was 20-21, not 17 so that part is probably RDJ's own tomfoolery.
