A Look Inside Richard Devine's Studio

Recommended Posts

wow he has loads of hardware, makes me wonder how his recorded ouput sounds so heavily DSP software processed. i rarely hear modular synth-esque sounds in his stuff, come to think of it i don't think i ever have. Would love to hear what he makes with these tools before running it through the computer.

i've heard some of his acid stuff, it's not bad but most of it sounds like a 303 on top of one drum machine. dying to hear what he does with the other 20+ synths in his studio, maybe hes working on his masterpiece?

the piece at the end of the video sounds promising...

he takes pictures of them and talks about them in interviews.

i totally dig richard devine's music and stuff, but honestly i kinda agree with you. he's kinda a corporate sell out here and half the stuff you see here was probably given to him for endorsing them, most of it probably never even sees a release but just caters to his gearslut-ness. he's like the hefner of the synth world...lucky son of a bitch.

its not selling out, if you enjoy it. sound design was always his first love... it was only after he had a massive library of sounds, that he decided to make music with it. the fact that he creates sounds for companies, and is now doing professional sound design gigs, has nothing to do with his music.

fuck, if you put out a few albums, and a bunch of companies constantly came to you and said "here, take these" wouldn't you? and don't say you wouldn't... we all know it's bullshit.

the fact is, he is a talented guy, a motivated guy, and a successful guy. all I see in people who complain, is envy.

What about that track "JiffAcid" from the Eyelicker album?

He's one organized guy.

i completely agree with you. i didn't mean it to be a negative thing, "sell out" was probably the wrong choice of words. i just meant he's kinda put his music on the backburner so he can spend more time making promotional videos for companies, and as a listener that's a bummer for me. but if i was provided with the opportunity to say "fuck it all, i'm going to pick up where timbaland left off and get rich" and have somebody give me a Kyma and an Eventide h8000 for my own personal pleasure, then i'd say fuck my listeners.

my main point was simply that i'm sure a lot of his gear that's been given to him gets used in fun little one-night experiments but he's probably got a tight little collection of gear and software that he uses exclusively for his albums.

as musicians here we know that to make quality music it's more about knowing a few tools inside out than playing millions of presets on a shitload of pirated vsts, and richard is an excellent musician so i'm sure although he's a god he probably doesn't really use that complex of a setup when writing music. minimal FTW.

It almost looks complete except for I don't see that Casio keyboard Squarepusher showed off in Modulations in there.

i did not like that track one bit, to me it just sounded like richard jumping on the acid bangwagon when everybody else was doing it.

i heard him play some monomachine and machinedrum stuff at his last show that was pretty amazing.

I saw hime live last summer and it sounded a lot like stuff from Asect:Dsect or Cautella with wicked visuals. I didn't recognize much of it so I hope he's got some new stuff ready to release.

Also I just found this very recent interview:

There's some unreleased stuff on that page as well.

Richard Devine the last two times I've seen him live has been amazing. I fucking love Devine. I chose to watch him over Aphex at Bloc 2009 and I didn't regret it.

that why he can afford to burn keyboards at his shows

that was at a product showcase (like namm or something like that) and the company specifically gave him one, and asked him to do it. it was not his personal one that he just decided to destroy.

Yeah man, I'd love a recording. His Glade set was awesome, he had a little time left so he chucked on a sped up version of Arc Acid at the end (as if it wasn't fast enough!) and it was fucking mental.

He's a really nice bloke too, very humble.

hmm... looks like a sweet setup. It makes me realize I need to get my gear organized soon, it's in a pile in the corner of my attic at the moment. also... wtf? he's a white nerdy dude?

Some songs I made with my fingers and electronics. In the process of making some more. Hopefully.

uhh...have you listened to his music before? it's not that surprising.

EDIT: is he actually white? not that it matters.

I always thought he was a tuff kung fu master, this is the only pic I had seen until now.
