question about phrase sampling I think

you make a pattern and then trigger it as part of another pattern, is that what phrase sampling is? are there drum machines or stand alone sequencers that do this or is it mostly a keyboard thing?

i sometimes sample a pattern or a bit of a pattern then reload that so the pattern is then triggered like an instrument (within another pattern)

I think it would be cool to make a short drill pattern or something and then be able to trigger it by hitting a drum pad rather than copying and pasting, and then go back and edit it more after it's triggered within another pattern. and I don't know what the feature is called that would let me do that.

yeah i believe that's a form of phrase sampling (can't remember if there's a different name to separate it from just loop sampling), i believe energyxt allows you to do that. it's basically a programmable arpeggiator.

you can midi map your clips in ableton and then record them into session view.

You can certainly do it in Buzz with PatternXP, it's called sub-patterns on that. I've never used it myself though....
