Guest mikew5th
i've had my iphone 3gs for almost 2 months now. besides the battery life, and shitty at&t coverage, i really do like it alot the only things i want to do with it, but can't at the moment, is have a google voice app, and tether my computer to the iphone so i can get online with the laptop i know if i jailbreak it i can do these things but i know there was that virus just recently for jailbroken iphone's, but i heard it only affected ones that had the default password for something. but could that one be just the first of many? are there any other risks when jailbreaking the iphone? i read somewhere that 10% of iphones and ipod touches are jailbroken i met one guy who got out of his at&t plan (you have to sign up for 2 years with at&t when buying the iphone) by saying he was moving to some remote part of alaska that didn't have service, and he now has a different provider. is it just that easy to get out of their contract? any info or firsthand experience relating to this subject would be helpful Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/50741-iphone-jailbreaking-and-unlocking/ Share on other sites

Guest chax
I recently acquired a new iphone as well, and am continually amazed at the amazing stuff it can do. I've been hearing a lot about jailbreaking, but I've actually decided not to do it. When you jailbreak it, you are authorizing non-approved software and applications to be installed and run on the phone. This causes a lot of stability issues and drains even more of the battery with processes and things that are constantly running in the background. The iphone works great right now with apple approved software and firmware and I don't see the need to mess around with it. Not worth the trouble or hassle for the non-benefits for me. Unless there is a compelling reason to jailbreak the iphone, I just don't see the point. EdamAnchorman
just got a new one a couple weeks back. all i wanna do is set the text message alert sound to one of my uploaded sounds rather than one of the 6 shitty default sounds, but everything i've read says that you have to jailbreak the phone to do this. fuckin apple. Guest mikew5th
i didn't know you could tether without jailbreaking - how do you do that? but i have a google voice number and would really like to have that google voice app, right now i can text people from the google voice web page, but it doesn't let me call people from there - how is that not violating net neutrality? That has nothing to do with net neutrality. It's all about AT&T not wishing to lose out on their huge contracts. Jailbreaking is a piece of piss. It's literally download one app and follow the very very simple instructions (laid out in graphical format....) The virus (or was it a trojan? I can't recall) only affected people who didn't change the default SSH password. Which is very easy to do. Some jailbroken apps will run in the background, and kill your battery faster than normal. However, there is also an app that allows you to turn off background processes. If your iPhone gets fucked up, all you have to do is restore through iTunes, and take it in to the Apple store. They'll never know that you jailbroke the device. go to ipodtouchfans.com for more info... Seriously. Fuck AT&T. That shit would be so fuckin tight. What a fuckin tease. btw I've had my iPhone for 3 or 4 months now and i get at least one dropped call per day. I think I may have only had 3 dropped calls in my 3 or 4 years with T-Mobile. I think about jailbreaking my phone just to go back to T-Mobile. When I left, it was like breaking up with a cool girlfriend. They were trying to tell me that if I was sold on the iPhone that they offered service to iPhones and that I could just go to their site and download something for iPhones for use with t-mobile. It was very tempting. I chickened out. *edit* I found this interesting article about tethering with a jailboken iPhone on teh googles. Guest mikew5th
so if i can get out of my at&t contract and unlock it, who is the best provider to go with? i think the guy i talked to that had unlocked his phone had t-mobile, but he has a pre-paid plan, and he couldn't get a data plan with that. he said it didn't really matter 'cause he could get wifi many places, but i am out camping or places where i cant get wifi alot i dont know how much longer i'll be in the usa, so i dont want to sign another contract too thats cool theres an app that lets you turn of background processes, i turned off push notifications, but am still having trouble with battery life and to dl youtube videos, i didn't know that either - more reasons to jailbreak if there is an app that would play .avi files - that would be the shit if apple finds out you jailbreak or unlock the iPhone, does that void its warranty? oh apple, what happened? i used to love you.
