Evolution of the Hipster, 2000-Present

I'm prone to hipster bashing, but for the most part I can't say I hate them. I'm guilty of musical snobbery and buying a thrift store t-shirt here and there in the past. Here is a tongue-in-cheek visual history chart about their "evolution" this decade. The last slide is dead on.

fuck off!

It's funny how no one claims to be a hipster.

Most hipster bashing is done by other hipsters - hipster on hipster crime.

If you're on this board, it's probably not a question of whether you're a hipster or not, but to what degree you are a hipster.

The funny thing is this hipster bashing only happens online.

I haven't even met anyone IRL who knows of the term "hipster", it's just "indie"-style or whatever, so many people wear this stuff. It's not even derogatory to call someone a hipster.. It's just americans on the internet who seem to enjoy bashing these people.

It's certainly a common term in the U.S.

I first heard it used pretty commonly in the late '90s (aside from it's original meaning in the '50s or whenever).

No one's ever been quite sure what it means - kind of a broad term.

I tried to watch that new guido reality show on Mtv last night but fell asleep.

Boring ass guidos..

Agreed. I am definately guilty of making sure I'm not a "average" guy who wears cargo shorts and polo shirts. And I was a hipster for halloween this year.

Totally. Hipsters in the 1940s were pot smoking, leftist, jazz aficianados, kind of people who were later influencial towards or part of the Beat poets in the 1950s. Pretty much another term for Beatniks. The term is now applied to well, I dunno, read this. My link

Personally, I use to call them scenesters until a few years ago. Scenesters to me was a catch-all term for indie rock and underground music fans who weren't emo, metal, goth, punk, ravers, etc. And Hipsters are, according to haters, especially apathetic, ironic, superficial scenesters.

Yeah it's subjective of course. LATFH is a better source.

The wikipedia article is really problematic.

For instance..

  Quote
Rob Horning in "The Death of the Hipster" argues that the "...problem with hipsters" is the "way in which they reduce the particularity of anything you might be curious about or invested in into the same dreary common denominator of how “cool” it is perceived to be", as "...just another signifier of personal identity." Furthermore, he argues that the "hipster is defined by a lack of authenticity, by a sense of lateness to the scene" or the way that they transform the situation into a "self-conscious scene, something others can scrutinize and exploit".

Who's more of a pretentious hipster, the person they're describing, or the person who wrote that subjective description?

Takes one, to some degree, to write about one. Sorta like you have to be Muslim to visit Mecca. The whole concept is problematic, because it doesn't quite self-indentify. Some hipsters are loud and proud, others are just mute assholes. I have both good friends and quasi-enemies who are both arguably hipsters, so I dunno.

I think you're not, and if you don't use a Mac, you're in the clear.

Here's a test I developed:

Do you listen to Girl Talk?

A. Hell yes, I've danced on-stage at one of his gigs = You're a hipster.

B. Yes, it's on my iPod somewhere = probably a hipster

C. It's just a dude with Ableton who does mash-ups, 2 Many DJ's is better = likely not a hipster, but pretentious about certain music and possible member of another subculture...or WATMM.

D. I dunno, I like DJ AM though! RIP! = You're not a hipster.

there is no evolution, i saw every single one of those on a daily basis when i lived in the city.

yeah basically. all the examples look the same.

a side-note: scene kids do not look like that. they're the ones with the shitty bleached hair with black streaks and pink blue orange neon wacky random jewelry. they're myspace's main audience.

i don't know why people try to make these fashion trends into something that they're not, like descriptions of personality and values. it's just fun to hate on people that dress better than you, i guess.
