Guest covenant
Greetings, I just got one iBook G4 @ 800Mhz with 640Mb Ram and a MIDI <-> USB cable EDIROL UM1X. My setup does not use a computer. My sequencer is a Yamaha RM1X. I would like to use the iBOOK in the setup, maybe running a VST Synth or Sampler over a Host app, or even using it as my mais sequencer and the RM1X just as a tone generator. My question is, what software can this old iBook run? Ableton Live may be too heavy for it right? Is there any good sampler software that can be triggered from my master controller? Is there anyone using such a low end gear for live act? Thank you and best regards Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/51286-what-use-for-a-ibook-g4/ Share on other sites
ryancolecreate
I'v got the same and it will actually run Logic. Another use might be to make some PD or MAX patches with it and incorporate that into your act. I've got a few handy patches floating around here some place. i think in that MAX thread. Thank you for the reply. What version of Logic would be the most eficient for the machine? I have no idea of what MAX or PD is. Will have to check it out. Thank you once again Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/51286-what-use-for-a-ibook-g4/#findComment-1181387 Share on other sites
Guest tysen
If you have another (better) computer, you could use the iBook as an extra processor using Logic's Node application. That's all I can think of...I tried to find out which old version of Logic would work for you but couldn't really find the correct information. BCM
should run quite a lot - Reason 1 & 2, earlier Cubase, earlier Logic etc - just don't expect it to work with multiple vsts and effects all running at once... if I were you I'd set it up with some early version of Cubase (maybe Cubase SX1, Cubase SL1, Cubase SX2 or Cubase SL2) and use it as the main MIDI clock source to trigger your RM1x to play in sync... then do all your sequences on the RM1x itself, but have it start playback when you press play in Cubase. then record the audio output from your RM1x or other stuff into different tracks in Cubase all in sync with each other. Voilà! simple multitrack setup where you can easily see your recorded audio then go in and cut it all up, re-arrange parts, add effects etc etc edit: edirol um1x has no audio in/out has it....hmmmm, you might need to purchase a half decent usb audio interface for the above suggestion. ryancolecreate
with max and PD you can create crazy sequencers, midi controllers ect. Basically any type of midi transformation. For example I built a patch randomizer for external gear, and an envelope bank that sends an adsr envelope out on any midi cc#. It's triggered by a note on event, so it's basically an extra envelope for what ever you want. Logic 7 will run for sure, but youll have to use Logic express as at that time the Pro version was dongle protected. The multi-trck idea is pretty cool too. Simple and nice. :) I'd recommend getting a decent multi-channel audio box if you want that to be useful. If you don't mind recording everything down to one track then a simple one will do, but that would make me crazy.
