Moby...

Was channel surfing last night and settled on a hour long review of Moby on Flaunt - a much better effort than the usual electro crap they stick on.

Had forgotten that, many years back, he actually had some pretty good techno tunes like 'Go' and 'Move' - albeit on the commercial poppy side. And then he found there was a load of music to be made in harmless elevator music and started churning out pure shit. You'd almost forget that some of these acts once did stuff that wasn't bad at all.

And that was my hour with Moby.

The first Moby stuff I ever heard sounded like this. So for a long time I thought he was just another gay dude making "happy hardcore".

I like 'Feeling So Real' but that's about it.

Play is not half bad. It's the stuff that followed that was pretty lame.

But remember stuff like Next is the E?

Now that he is the housewives favourite, and only marginally edgier than Enya, does he ever get tempted to churn out this stuff at full blast again?

i hate how he recently released a half-(or quarter-)assed post-rock track and his fans seem to be ejaculating over it when real, awesome post-rock stuff gets overlooked most of the time. it's not fair!

i love this track but nothing else by Moby has ever done it for me. does he have anything else like this?

i think its good this way. i dont want moby fans to listen to my post-rock.

I don't like much of Moby's stuff at all past his early stuff, but apparently he does better music under his Voodoo Child moniker.

He has a track at the end of the movie "Heat" with Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro. Plays just before and as the credits start rolling. It's quite a nice track and ends the movie on a glorious, awe inducing note. Other than that, I haven't been too interested in Moby.

Did you guys ever see the video of FSU mugging him? They jumped him on the street in front of a club in Boston. Security guys came to help and they got maced. It's on "Boston Beatdown vol 2" and not all that great footage.

I have a vhs of one of his early videos from amp before he got real famous. I liked it, but I was also real young at the time. Can't remember which one it was.

nah. post rock is like saying "fuck rock music, we're so much better than that" whereas idm is more like "this is music for nerds"

both are incredibly pretentious but i think post rock wins out because it defies an entire 50 years of music.

but post-rock is better than standard rock music!

idm is more like "hey this kind of electronic music has existed for 30-40 years but nobody listened to it, so let's give it a pretentious genre name and pretend we invented it"

I think IDM wins that round in being a silly genre name :D

don't get me wrong though, both are pretty amazing genres. well at least idm was amazing, hehe.
