Is there any kind of free diagram layout software?

basically i want to be able to link loads of boxes together, then hit a button and they're arranged in the most compact space with the least arrows overlapping. is there anything like this for mac?

Yes it does, it just limits the maximum board size and number of layers.

ive heard a lot of good things about omnigraffle. Right now i'm trying to remember the famous opensource package for this kind of thing, maybe it is dia. No, graphviz http://www.pixelglow.com/graphviz/ is what i'm thinking of.

yeah, graphviz is fantastic. it has an absurd amount of functionality and its really easy to pick up.
