Living with a Vegetarian

Recommended Posts

So I live with a couple friends, and we had a bit of a fly problem. Our compost bin couldn't close securely, and we didn't take out the compost frequently enough, so naturally the fly population rose. We resolved to take the compost our more often, and we got a new seal-able compost bin. But there were still a bunch of flies around, and they were pissing me off. So I set up a bunch of fly traps. They worked super great, and caught most of the flies. Most of my house mates thought this was a great idea.

However, another friend of mine just moved in with us, and she was horrified at the fly traps. She said something like "would you like to be trapped in a glass jar and drown in a pool of vinegar?", implying that, since I don't want to drown, it is unfair to kill flies. I just looked at her dumbfounded. Then she said "look, the flies feel trapped. They want to be free." I said "I don't think you can attribute complicated feelings like that to flies". Then she said "oh, I know they aren't feeling it, it just makes me sad looking at them." I said "would you rather leave food out then so they don't starve to death." She said "But that's different, I don't want to play an active role in making the flies miserable".

At this point a fly is buzzing around my head, and, as a reaction, I swatted it. She stormed into her room.

Now, I should say that getting along with my house mates is really important to me. I took down the fly traps, and I try hard not to swat them when she's in the room. Fortunately most of them are gone, and there are only 1 or 2 at any given time now. It's not that much to put up with to avoid fighting with he people I live with, or having them leave passive aggressive notes and shit. But seriously, what the fuck! What should I do if the flies come back?

EDIT: PS, I did not mean this to be offensive to all vegetarians. I know plenty of vegetarians who would not espouse compassion for flies.

Guest Benedict Cumberbatch

i'm a vegetarian. i catch and release flies, spiders, moths etc. partly due to not wanting to kill them, partly due to not wanting blood smears on white walls.

when i was a kid i used to pour boiling water on ant nests, now i can barely kill one ant

but would you catch and release them if you actually had an infestation?

I suggested releasing the flies outside, but she was smart enough to figure out that they'd freeze (I live in toronto).

I think I might just leave mouse traps lying around the house to see what she does.

EDIT: also, obviously the composting situation was bad. That's why we changed it. We got a small compost bin (that can't hold very much, so we have to empty is frequently) and it has a seal-able lid, so nothing can get in and out. But after we did this, there flies were still a problem.

i was a vegetarian (i eat fish now), and i've got to say that is indeed fucking ridiculous. i can't stand those kind of people, who the fuck made her saviour of all flies? hippie scum.

sure, if i find really slow moving insects in my house that are easy to catch, i tend to let them out, but if it's too much of a hassle (like fucking flies), i'll just get a newspaper.

Don't larger animals like Bisen or some shit swat flies all the time with their tail and crap? Plus flies are dirty and can spread shit... right?

you need screens on your windows or something to keep flies from coming inside at all. the compost is not the problem. they are not spontaneously generating inside of it. they are just attracted to it. otherwise, you'd have flies spread out in the house.

To answer a previous question. She does not eat fish. She ate salmon once, and felt really guilty.

I wouldn't go so far as call her a retarded cunt. I mean, nobody's perfect, right. I figure if I can find people who I can stand, I'm lucky, and shouldn't expect to find people I agree with ideologically in every way.

But seriously... FLIES! Like, what the fuck.

If you want a serious answer.

Explain to her as simply as possible that having flies around your kitchen (Im assuming) is really really unhygienic. And to get rid of them without harming them would be more time consuming then its worth and more difficult. If she would like to get rid of them by herself without harming them then she should, otherwise suck it up and thank fuck you havent already got something off them.

I hate bugs. Let them die. Flies spread disease. They eat rotten things, and when they eat, they do it by drooling on things.

Plus they only live for a few days, and there are tons of them.

Does she want to protect cancer cells, too? Sounds like she's into that "life is sacred" horse shit. I'm a vegetarian, but come on. It's a goddamn fly.

Quote. Rik. "Young Ones":

"Neil! Why do you keep letting all these flies in?!"

I hate flies. I knew this guy who lived in this crummy apartment complex and on account of his lack of hygiene, a veritable fly infestation had manifested itself inside his room somewhere. Then the flies began to migrate to other parts of the building and it was a royal fucking mess.

In the end the landlord had to throw him out and have the whole dam place fumigated.

Also, on returning from a months vacation, I was hanging with my younger bro and wanted to open the window. I had noticed a fly was in the room before I opened the window, but when I did, more came in! And this was autumn so normally there wouldn't be many flies around. However each time i went to open the window, more flies would flood in! And what's more they were a strange type of fly too, slightly larger and more elongated than your average house fly.

Consequently I discovered a small cove of flies all scrunched up together hibernating or something in the nook between the window and the wall. Half of them were even dead and just fell out as the others bolted around like crazy. So, the hoover soon saw the last of them. But man, that was disgusting and even a tad creepy.

Flies are nasty things. Even those Jeff Goldblum movies creep me out a little. Brundlefly.......infact you should show these movies to your crazy fly-loving room mate. That'll smarten her up!

I think it might be more of an emotional reaction for her, although she is a christian. I think she's motivated by putting herself in the position of the flies and imagining that they must feel really claustrophobic or something.

My point is around 6:30.

Lol. Good video. I watched the whole thing. I'd show this to her, but I don't think it'd get through. I remember I once read her some of David Hume's essay on how suicide isn't that bad, and she didn't respond to it very well.

Good to know. I don't think they're coming through the windows, because it's cold outside. They must be living in the building.
