Guest meneedit
Anybody know how to make a sawtooth sound like this: http://www.yousendit.com/download/MVNkZ285WkJ0NjlMWEE9PQ ??? I can hear a possible stereo enhancer on it but there are some other attributes that I cant pick up. Hopefully somebody can help. Bubba69
yeah sounds like there is either a little bit of osc sync (or ringmod) in the oscillator section can't tell. Guest meneedit
It's really funny you should mention osc sync because the last few days i've been working on some electro-house tracks and one thing thats been annoying the hell out of me is phasing problems. On my hardware synth (alesis ion) if I octave a couple of saws (one octave apart), set them to the exact same shape with no detuning, remove everything from the mod matrix, set analog drift to 0, etc etc.... it still has phasing problems. Nobody has a solution to this. The only way I can fix it is to turn on 'Hard Osc Sync' but then it changes the sound completely. It pisses me off. enki
The sample you posted sounds an awful lot like unison with ample amounts of detune and spread on something like the Virus. I'm not sure what you mean about "phasing problems" ... I mean, isn't the point of stacking two oscillators to create the phasing effects of them beating against each other? Either you want them perfectly in phase and hard sync should accomplish that perfectly, or you want them to phase as is currently happening. One reason that stereo unison sounds so fat is that the detuned oscillators don't cancel each other out because they are spread across the stereo field. The one phasing issue that really bothers me is when the natural phase cancellation occurs right when the voice is triggered, which can rob the sound of a sharp attack. Of course, this problem is easily eliminated by syncing the oscillators to the gate signal so that all of the attack phases are identical. Easy enough to accomplish with a modular and many VA synths. Guest meneedit
Thanks for the reply dude. Well basically, the problem is that i'll be using the layered saws as a bassline but then when the melody plays there are parts where it gets weak, rendering it useless as a bassline. What should I do if i dont want to use osc sync??? Should I EQ out all the bass freqs of the saw and use something solid and muffled as the bassline underneath the saw? I just get the feeling that there is another solution and that most artists wouldnt have to do that.
