Guest Wall Bird
So this is a problem I've been thinking about on and off ever since this album came out, but on Jay Z's 'Justify My Thug' the track starts with out with a brief sound that for the life of me I have not been able to figure out how to recreate. Here is the sound in question: Sorry about the dumb intro, I couldn't find a video without one on Youtube. The sound, and the track, begin at the 0:13 mark: [youtubehd]6fwQQ5UrSAY[/youtubehd] What gets me about this sound is that it has the quality of an accelerating frequency, yet retains a huge bass presence, which typically goes away as a pitch-related frequency increases. You may or may not be able to hear this due to the sound quality of Youtube, but it's definitely there on the original file. What I'm also amazed by is the dry, rough, texture of the sound, which is quite uncharacteristic of most synthesizers I know of. I need to know how to achieve these two qualities. The closest approximation I can imagine is some form of feedback, but it strikes me as being far too clean and controlled to be hardware derived simply. It must have some sort of element that I haven't comprehended yet. Well, I'm stumped. Does anyone have any thoughts? Guest Blanket Fort Collapse
hmmmmmmm purty interesting, soo tired I might try to see if I could make something similar with synth manipulation in reason, havent really tried to duplicate weird sounds like that at all before so im down for the challenge Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/51765-cannot-solve-this-sound/#findComment-1193892 Share on other sites
chim
some extremely high resonance feedback response, with some LFO.. not difficult to make but difficult to replicate exactly, shit goes haywire with those settings.. resonance frequency tweaking generally dont affect bass at lower pole filters Edited December 21, 2009 by chimera slot mom Thanks Haha Confused Sad Facepalm Burger Farnsworth Big Brain Like × Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/51765-cannot-solve-this-sound/#findComment-1193895 Share on other sites
modey
sounds a bit like the noise i made lastnight when re-routing the audio output of an electribe es-1 into its input, with the decimator effect and delay applied. so yeah, some kind of feedback. ryancolecreate
Could be a sample could be a sample with lots of manipulation could be metasynth could be vinyl could be a fret sound most likely its a sample taken from a long track of someone twisting knobs in every conceivable direction. I'd say trying to recreate it would be a waste of time. Just use it as a starting point for your own weird sounds. FLA FUR BIS FLE
sounds like a guitar pick scraping the coils of a string. Guest Blanket Fort Collapse
definitely similar, kinda am surprised no one has mentioned that. As a kid who seen a lot of pick scrapes in his time, I dont tink that was achieved by calculated organic pick scrape on a bass git fiddle alone, probably could get it by pick scraping a bass and layer it with pitch modulation time stretch or something though, probably see how close I can come with an 5 string ibanez with extremely hot active pickups and sample manipulation Quote Link to comment https://forum.watmm.com/topic/51765-cannot-solve-this-sound/#findComment-1194823 Share on other sites
futureimage
I dunno... I'd still say that's a filter with massive feedback. You can get those types of sounds from the Korg MS-20 very very easily. Braintree
It sounds like feedback, but the sound in question is probably layered. Sounds reversed, or it could just have an envelope on the attack. It's probably a sample and not synthesis.
