Seven Forty Seven and Closes

Recommended Posts

Don't want to piss on your parade mate but the sample at the beginning is from a track on one of their old tunes trilogy (audiotrack 06 i think, without checking).

If your new to BoC are getting dragged in by mp3's of early stuff then a word of warning. Anything pre Box Maxima / Twoism is fake, and that is fact.

Welcome though and enjoy.

Mwuh ? Is this just some attention seeking first post or do you know something noone else here (aside from MDG) does....as digger says pre-Boc Maxima (aside from the Old Tunes 'trilogy') are fake

I haven't eaten a Wagon Wheel since 07/11/07... ilovecubus.co.uk - 25ml of mp3 taken twice daily.

Well, considering SevenFortySeven has been around since 2001 (on the official site when they were promoting Geogaddi), it's already 9 years old...

No they're legit, there is a 'fake' version of one of the compilations though, named A Few Old Tunes Vol.2 which seems to be a weird mish-mash of Old Tunes Vol.2 and A Few Old Tunes.

You're not confusing that with what was mistakenly called "A Few Old Tunes Vol.1", right?

Not new to BoC at all. Fan since 2000. I posted on the old yahoo groups, followed the "few old tunes" freak out in 2004. I noticed joyrex is a site admin here now (I presume its the same guy from back then).

Basically, I just stumbled upon a claimed Closes Vol 1 which I assumed to be a fake like everything else. Given that 5d off of the closes "Leak" (which I found at http://freddypogo.blogspot.com/2008/11/boards-of-canada-closes-vol1-music-70.html) had a sample from seven forty seven on it, this to me was an plausible way to consider it at least partially legit. I hadn't realized that Seven Forty Seven was kicking around - I seriously thought that the Warp20 set was the first time it was released.

Moreover, I wouldn't be absolutely certain that the rest of it is fake. The Boards sound is not the easiest to fake. A lot of the assumptions about its fakeness is based on the idea that the track times are off, but how are we to know what the track times are if no one has heard it? I realize Marumari has some mislabeled tracks out there. Also, to me Mum doesn't sound anything like boards compositionally or tonally.

As for first post - thanks. Its the first post with a new account - but I haven't posted on here on the old one in a while anyway.

Nope. It was a serious question: leak from 2008 has sample from a song that I thought was released in 2009 - makes it somewhat notable in my world. As for speculating on the legitimacy of these songs based on their sound; that could go on forever (and actually I think it has).

At the very least, the leak has a pretty interesting roygbiv "remake" that certainly sounds early nineties to me (numerator), if we posit that its completely not BoC.

No worries. I am relatively new here too but have been listening BoC since IABPOITC.

It doesn't help the band that they have quite a substantial fanbase yet remain overtly secretive, aside from when they've got product to promote (i'm sure they only do interviews then as a contractual obligation).

However, they (or a spokesperson for the band) are the first to jump on any possible leaks / fakes that knock about. Hence the common knowledge that anything off Acid Memories / Hooper Bay etc. (apart from the three samples taken from their old website) are fake, and that they came out and admitted the old tunes stuff was genuine. Who knows, if the Old Tunes series of tapes wasn't leaked, they may have appeared in a more professional, more structured package. Just a thought.

Maybe when they do the next round of interviews, someone with a bit of knowledge and clout (that's you Fredd-E) may get to grill the band for us.

Are you saying any leaked tracks from Pre-Twoism material is fake, or the releases themselves are fake?

The funny thing is, I bet there's more we DON'T know about that BoC have stored away than what we DO.

I personally don't think the early stuff exists.

I've said it here before, if 50 or so cassettes / cd's were distributed amongst friends of the first 5 "releases" then one would have materialised. Having said that, they'd just deny it and we'd be back at square one. That's how old tunes leaked wasn't it, but they owned up to it being them (i've a sneaking suspicion it was planned). And, if the band went through numerous members in their shoegazing period, one would have piped up.

Of course they've got loads of stuff we aint heard, and we aint gonna hear it cos i'd imagine the majority is shite just like 50% of the Old Tunes stuff. Some make it into other tracks but i imagine most gets discarded (in a folder called Old Tunes, Old Tunes 2, A Few More Random Tracks etc etc).

I hope i'm proved wrong but silence don't do it for me. I know one thing for sure, they couldn't give a flying fuck.
