It reminds me somewhat of Matt Damon in Team America. Everytime he is on camera he drawls "Matt Damon"

This rings true in his, and many others (among them Nicholas Cage), big Hollywood stars, who always seems to be playing themselves instead of properly exploring their given characters.

If Tom Hanks is in a film, it seems the whole films revolves around Tom Hanks. Big picture of him on the front cover/poster, his name all over the shop. It must be a blessing and a curse to be one of these big actors. It also inevitably gives away the destiny of the actor's character in the film. Eg, if its the Schwarzzeneggers, Hanks's, Cages starring in a film you can begin to carefully guess the course of action of said actor in any given film they may be starring in. Then drearily acknowledge your hunch after seeing the film.

This of course gives a certain charm to their characters (esp Schwarzenegger) allowing for a good action/comedy romp. But inevitably this wares off and you get really tired of seeing Will Smith "portraying" so and so, when it's blatantly all about him.

Bah humbug!

i always thought tom hanks was pretty good in getting in character, although i know what you mean about how actors are playing themselves.

Nicholas Cage is such a strangely compelling actor. He does crapfests like National Treasure and Face Off (which, ok, I still enjoyed - but not for the acting) and then he has seriously Oscar worthy performances like Leaving Las Vegas and Adaptation. I mean, god DAMN he was fucking awesome in Adaptation. Never seen an actor be so wildly inconsistent in their roles/apparent ability.

Yeah - just saw that on Ain't it Cool's 2010 preview list - looks horrible . . . but then you have him starring in "Kick Ass" which is supposed to be AWESOME.
